Professional wrestling in Africa has faced numerous challenges over the years, from lack of recognition and sponsorship to the neglect of the sport by fans. However, Pro Wrestling Africa (PWA) is on a mission to change the face of African professional wrestling and revive its lost glory.
Established in 2015, PWA was founded with the vision of creating a Mecca of exciting world-class modern-day professional wrestling in Africa. Secretary General Olusesan Olukoya, a wrestling enthusiast, conceived the idea of PWA in 1999 while managing a pro wrestling promotion in Liberia. The organization officially came to fruition after a continental Pro Wrestling Summit in Yaoundé, Cameroon, where representatives from several African countries gathered to advance, promote, and rebuild the sport.
Since its establishment, PWA has organized multiple pro wrestling tournaments in Cameroon, Nigeria, and Ghana, with plans to expand to Liberia, Kenya, Congo DR, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. These events have showcased the abundant talent in African wrestling and attracted international talents, illustrating the potential of the sport on the continent.
Olukoya's vision for African wrestling goes beyond organizing tournaments. PWA aims to promote better relationships and mutual understanding in the wrestling world. The organization is dedicated to researching the origin and historical background of world wrestling, and is building a world-standard pro wrestling library in Africa for research purposes.
PWA also seeks to establish close relationships between African wrestling stars and their foreign counterparts. The organization plans to build and maintain an African Hall of Fame to create more wrestling awareness and hold an annual wrestling convention to recognize and reward outstanding achievements in Africa and the world.
Among PWA's notable achievements is the promotion of the first-ever African wrestling heavyweight championship in Yaoundé, Cameroon, known as the Battle of Yaoundé. This championship marked a significant milestone in the revival of African wrestling and set the stage for future events.
Collaboration is a crucial aspect of PWA's strategy for growth. The organization is partnering with the Golden Wrestling Federacy (GWF) based in Florida, USA, to train athletes from Togo and Benin Republic. PWA aims to establish pro wrestling federations in these two French-speaking nations and plans to collaborate with other national wrestling federations across Africa.
Currently, 22 African wrestling organizations are under the auspices of PWA, further expanding its reach and impact on the continent. PWA recognizes that the lack of sponsorship has contributed to the decline in the popularity of professional wrestling in Africa. However, with adequate funding, attention, and support, PWA believes that the sport can regain its lost glory.
The achievements of PWA and the vision for African wrestling are gradually turning into a reality. The organization is successfully showcasing African talents and attracting international recognition. With its commitment to promoting and rebuilding the sport, Pro Wrestling Africa is bringing hope to African wrestling and striving to establish a new generation of wrestling champions in Africa.
