The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on security agencies to tackle violence and undemocratic activities in the forthcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi states. Abuja, July 28, 2023 (Naija247news) - The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on security agencies to take decisive action against perpetrators of violence and undemocratic activities leading up to the Nov. 11 off-cycle governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi states.

Speaking at the Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) meeting to review the 2023 general election, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, emphasized the need to draw lessons from the challenges faced during the previous elections for improved performance in future electoral activities.

Prof. Yakubu stressed the importance of a secure environment for the forthcoming by-elections and the three off-cycle governorship elections in the mentioned states. He expressed concerns over the recent violent clashes between opposing political parties and candidates and urged security agencies to maintain strict neutrality and take decisive action against any form of violence, vote buying, attacks on election officials, and disruptions of the electoral process.

He commended the security agencies and members of ICCES for their contributions to the peaceful conduct of the 2023 general elections. The synergy between INEC and security agencies played a crucial role in overcoming challenges, including targeted attacks on INEC offices nationwide.

The National Security Adviser and Co-Chair of ICCES, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, assured INEC of the security agencies' support in ensuring a safe and peaceful governorship election in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi states. He emphasized their commitment to guarantee the safety of Nigerians and INEC staff during the electoral process.

The meeting, which had the presence of heads or representatives of security agencies in the country, focused on reinforcing efforts to create a secure environment for the upcoming governorship elections and other electoral activities in the next three years. INEC's peaceful conduct of the 2023 elections and its innovative adoption of technologies for the election received commendations during the meeting.
