OSOGBO, Nigeria -- The State of Osun in Nigeria has bid farewell to its state crest, flag, and anthem, which were established during former Governor Rauf Aregbesola's administration. The Osun State House of Assembly officially repealed the Osun State Anthem, Crest, and Flag Law 2012 in a plenary session held on July 11, 2023, marking the end of an era for these symbols of local identity.

This move comes in compliance with a Federal High Court judgment, which was issued on December 14, 2017. Kanmi Ajibola, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and state legislator representing the Oriade Constituency, challenged the now-abolished law. The House Speaker, Hon. Adewale Egbedun, shed light on the development, explaining that the House vacated a law that had already been invalidated by a Court of competent jurisdiction. Egbedun emphasized the House's commitment to abide by the letters and spirit of the Nigerian constitution.

In recognition of this, the House has agreed that all necessary corrections made can be incorporated into the 'Bill for Osun State Anthem, Crest, and Flag Bill 2023,' which is sponsored by the Majority Leader.

The initial law that authorized the creation of the state's unique anthem, flag, and crest was passed during the Speakership of Naheem Salam, under the request of the Aregbesola administration. This same administration also renamed the state from "Osun State, the State of the Living Spring" to "State of Osun, the State of the Virtuous," further shaping the state's identity.

The recent decision made by the Osun State House of Assembly, which was first announced during a plenary session by the Speaker last Friday, represents a significant shift in the state's identity.
