The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukuma Charles Soludo, has called on Nigerian youths to abstain from drug abuse and trafficking, citing the health hazards associated with such activities and the detrimental impact on human development. The governor made this call during the 2023 International Youth Day celebration, which featured a 6.5km "Walk and Run For Life" event held at the Awka Township Stadium. The event was attended by the governor's wife, Mrs Nonye Soludo, and the convener of the Healthy Living Campaign.

Highlighting the increasing addiction to hard drugs, particularly crystal meth, among the youth in Anambra, Governor Soludo expressed concern over the worrisome extent of the issue. He appealed to the youth to say no to drug abuse and trafficking, emphasizing the importance of healthy living and the creation of a safe society. The governor stressed the value of hard work, integrity, and industrialization, qualities known to the Igbo people, urging the youth to embody these principles and contribute positively to society.

In addition to addressing drug abuse, Governor Soludo pledged his administration's unwavering support for youth self-reliance programs in Anambra State. He assured the youth that his government would prioritize sports development and integrate sport economy into the state's administrative agenda. He recognized the potential of sports as a tool for wealth creation and emphasized its importance in shaping the future.

The State Commissioner for Youth Development, Hon. Patrick Agha-Mba, reiterated the commitment of Governor Soludo's administration to empowering the youth and promoting job and wealth creation. He highlighted the "One Youth Two Skills" program, designed to address youth restiveness and crime by equipping young people with valuable skills and opportunities for positive engagement. The commissioner praised Governor Soludo for his efforts in ensuring the safety and well-being of the youth, describing him as a pillar of support.

The theme for this year's International Youth Day, "Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World," was aligned with the broader goals of environmental conservation and sustainability. Engr Felix Odimegwu, the State Commissioner for Environment, advocated for the establishment of environmental clubs in schools across the country. These clubs would encourage students to develop a habit of cleanliness and contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

The celebration of International Youth Day witnessed the participation of various groups, including Corps Members, ASATU Youths, representatives from the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), and top government officials. This annual event, initiated by the United Nations, aims to raise awareness of cultural and legal issues affecting young people and celebrate their potential as valuable partners in global society.
