As the November 11, 2023 Imo State governorship election draws near, political analyst Mr. Sylvester Ahumibe has made predictions on the positions of two former governors, Senator Rochas Okorocha and Emeka Ihedioha. Ahumibe believes that both Okorocha and Ihedioha will opt to remain quiet and not openly endorse any of the current frontline candidates.
The three major candidates vying for the governorship position in Imo State are Governor Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Samuel Anyanwu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Senator Athan Achonu of the Labour Party (LP).
Ahumibe suggests that Okorocha and Ihedioha have eyeed the 2027 governorship election and are keeping a low profile to secure their future political ambitions. According to the analyst, Ihedioha may consider running in 2027, and it would be politically advantageous for him to wait for another four years. By then, Uzodimma, if re-elected, would be finishing his second term as governor, and Ihedioha would likely benefit from the Imo Charter Of Equity, which favors the Owerri zone in 2027.
However, Ahumibe acknowledges that Uzodimma may try to install a successor but emphasizes the historical difficulty of outgoing governors in Imo State achieving this goal. Both Achike Udenwa and Rochas Okorocha were unsuccessful in installing their chosen successors, while Ikedi Ohakim also failed to win re-election.
Regarding Ihedioha's potential support for Anyanwu, Ahumibe expects the former governor to distance himself from the PDP candidate. He cites the contentious process that led to Anyanwu's emergence as the PDP Imo governorship candidate, which Ihedioha criticized. Therefore, it would be politically unwise for Ihedioha to openly support Anyanwu.
As for Okorocha, Ahumibe points out that if his reconciliation with Uzodimma proves genuine, it would prevent him from backing either Anyanwu or Achonu. The analyst suggests that Okorocha may choose to quietly support his party's governorship candidate. Looking ahead to 2027, Okorocha could potentially root for his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, if he decides to run for governor at that time.
Based on these factors and considerations, neither Anyanwu nor Achonu is expected to receive the backing of Okorocha or Ihedioha. Both former governors appear to be biding their time and strategically positioning themselves for the 2027 Imo State governorship election.
