In a display of outstanding writing skills and critical thinking, Ike Destiny from VIK International School and Alexander Chibuzor of Archbishop Heerey Technical College emerged as the winners of the 2023 Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition for Secondary School students in Nigeria.
The 18th edition of the prestigious essay competition received a total of 795 entries, with students from various schools across the country participating. The theme for this year's competition was "Nigerianisation of Nigerians: A Look Inward."
The chief examiner, Prof. Akachi Ezeigbo, commended both Ike Destiny and Alexander Chibuzor for their exceptional essays. The winning students were able to address the topic within their mental capacity and showcased commendable passion and independent thinking.
"We congratulate and present them as exemplars of young people determined to forge their own path through the critical use of easy ways," said Prof. Akachi Ezeigbo.
It was noted that the judging process was particularly stringent this year due to a number of entries that were deemed unsuitable for consideration. Many of these essays were found to be either plagiarized from online sources or revised versions of existing materials.
To recognize their outstanding performance, Miss Ike Destiny will be awarded a cash prize of N500,000, along with a trophy and a plaque. Her school, VIK International School, will also receive a set of computers as a token of appreciation.
Master Chibuzor Alexander, the second-place winner, will receive a cash prize of N250,000 and a plaque. His school, Archbishop Heerey Technical College, will also be rewarded with a set of computers.
The prizes for the winners of the 18th Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition for Secondary Schools in Nigeria will be presented during the Mike Okonkwo Annual Lecture. This year's lecture will take place at the Zenith Shell Hall Muson Center, Onikan, Lagos, on Thursday, September 7, 2023.
The Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition has consistently encouraged the intellectual development of secondary school students in Nigeria. It serves as a platform for young minds to voice their opinions, explore critical issues, and showcase their writing skills.
