Nigeria's Commitment to Health Financing and Industrialisation: A Step towards Inclusive Growth

Nigeria's Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has reiterated the new administration's commitment to increase domestic health financing, promote health industrialisation, and improve health outcomes in the country. His statement came during a courtesy visit by a delegation from the Global Health Partners, including the Global Fund, US President's Malaria Initiative (PMI), and the US President's Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) at the Presidential Villa.

Mr. Shettima emphasized the administration's dedication to changing the narrative of inclusive growth and creating a Nigeria where every black man can be proud. He highlighted President Bola Tinubu's vision and political commitment, noting that these qualities have paved the way for repositioning the nation.

The Vice President urged global health partners and stakeholders in the health sector to support the new administration's efforts in realizing the President's vision for all Nigerians. He stressed three major commitments on behalf of the President: increasing domestic health financing, promoting health industrialisation, and catapulting the nation to a higher pedestal.

In response, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, stated that the global health partners had visited to assess the progress in combating HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Tuberculosis (TB), and other health issues in Nigeria. He highlighted their confidence in President Tinubu's vision to transform the health system and the commitment of almost $2 billion in grant financing over the next three years.

Mr. Pate also announced plans to retrain 120,000 frontline health workers within the next 12 to 18 months. This training will enhance primary healthcare at the grassroots level and make Nigeria's healthcare system more resilient to address diseases such as HIV, TB, and malaria.

John Nkengasong, the US Global AIDS Coordinator, appreciated the vision and direction of the Tinubu administration for the health sector. He emphasized the importance of aligning goals and targets in interventions with the clarity of vision and commitment demonstrated by the Minister of Health.

Peter Sands of the Global Fund and David Walton of the US President's Malaria Initiative commended Nigeria's efforts in combating malaria, HIV/AIDS, and TB. They acknowledged the government's commitment to tackle these health challenges and improve the well-being of the Nigerian population.

The visit by the global health partners coincided with the commemoration of the US Government's 20 years of support to Nigeria's fight against HIV/AIDS through the PEPFAR initiative. The partnership between Nigeria and these global health partners demonstrates a collective belief in the country's potential to transform its healthcare system and drive inclusive growth.

With the commitment to increased health financing, health industrialisation, and improved health outcomes, Nigeria's government is taking a significant step towards ensuring the well-being of its citizens.
