Enugu - The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide will honor some Igbo heroes and special Igbo allies at the 2023 Igbo Day celebration, which will be held at the Michael Okpara Square in Enugu on September 29, 2023.
The Chairman of the Central Planning Committee for the 2023 edition of Igbo Day, Professor Fred O. Eze, announced that the event will be chaired by Prince Arthur Eze (Ozoigbondu).
Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex socio-cultural organization representing Igbo people, aims to recognize and celebrate the contributions of these individuals to Igbo society and the Nigerian nation. The posthumous awards will be given to those who have played significant roles in shaping Igbo history and influencing the course of Nigerian politics.
The list of awardees includes some of the most prominent Igbo figures in Nigerian history. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first President of Nigeria and one of the leading proponents of Nigerian independence, will be honored for his pioneering efforts in the nation's political landscape.
Maj. Gen. Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi Ironsi, the first Nigerian General and the first Nigerian Military Head of State, will also be posthumously recognized for his contribution to the country's military leadership.
Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, the Head of State of Biafra during the Nigerian Civil War, will be honored for his role in advocating for Biafran independence and his subsequent efforts towards national reconciliation.
Other recipients of the posthumous awards include Dr. Alex Ekwueme, the former Vice President of Nigeria; Dr. Akanu Ibiam, the former Governor of the Eastern Region; Col. Adekunle Fajuyi, the former Military Governor of the Western Region; and Chief M.I. Okpara, the former Premier of the Eastern Region.
The recognition also extends to figures who played significant supporting roles in Igbo history. Gen. Phillip Effiong, second in command to Biafran Head of State, will be honored alongside Chief N.U. Akpan, former Secretary of the Eastern Region; Chief Dennis Osadebay, former Premier of the Mid West of Nigeria; and Chief Sam Mbakwe, the former Governor of the Old Imo State.
The list further includes icons from different fields who have left indelible marks on Igbo society and Nigeria at large. Dr. K.O. Mbadiwe, a renowned politician; Professor Chinua Achebe, an internationally acclaimed writer; Alhaji Ado Bayero, a former Emir of Kano; Chief Adeniran Ogunsanya, a prominent lawyer; and Mrs. Maryam Babangida, a former First Lady of Nigeria, will all be honored for their outstanding contributions.
Sen. Francis Ellah, a notable politician; Mazi Mbonu Ojike, a social activist; Chief C.C. Onoh, a former Governor of old Anambra State; Chief Mbazulike Amechi, a nationalist and first republic politician; Chief Mrs. Margaret Ekpo, a women's rights activist; Chief Emmanuel Chinwenwo Aguma, a legal luminary; and HM Eze S.N. Woluchem, a traditional ruler, are also on the list of awardees.
Justice Charles Dadi Onyeama, known for his significant contributions to the Nigerian judiciary, and Chief Richard Ihetu, popularly known as Dick Tiger, a world-renowned boxer, complete the array of remarkable honorees.
The 2023 Igbo Day celebration promises to be a momentous occasion as Ohanaeze Ndigbo acknowledges and pays tribute to these remarkable Igbo heroes and allies.
