Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria Relocates International Airlines to New Terminal in Lagos

Lagos, Nigeria - The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has taken swift action and complied with the directive of Mr. Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Technology, by gradually relocating international airlines from the old international terminal to the new one. This decision comes in response to the unfortunate fire incident that recently occurred at the old terminal.

The relocation process began shortly after Keyamo's order and accelerated after parts of the old international wing terminal were affected by the fire. The international airlines were given a deadline of October 1, 2023, to transfer their operations to the new terminal.

With the immediate redirection of passenger processing to the new international terminal, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria aims to ensure a seamless movement. However, passengers are requested to arrive at the airport well in advance to complete their check-in procedures on time to avoid missing their flights.

The new international terminal, which was commissioned on March 22, 2022, by former President Muhammadu Buhari, boasts state-of-the-art facilities. However, the terminal has been grossly underutilized since its inauguration. Keyamo expressed his appreciation for the modern amenities at the new terminal and emphasized the urgent need to vacate the old terminal.

Describing the old terminal as "decrepit, smelly, and outmoded," Keyamo stressed the importance of rehabilitating the facility that has been serving Nigeria since 1979. The old terminal, which not only houses inadequate facilities but also provides an unwelcoming atmosphere to visitors, needs a complete overhaul.

The Minister further explained that shutting down the old terminal would allow for the comprehensive rehabilitation it requires. Additionally, this move would address the long-standing complaints from passengers, including issues with the central air conditioning system and frequent breakdowns of the carousels. Keyamo believes that using the new terminal, which can accommodate the same level of traffic, is the best way forward.

Acknowledging the initial oversight during the construction of the new terminal, the Minister highlighted the importance of considering the needs of large aircraft and avio-bridges to enhance passenger comfort upon arrival.

At a time when Nigeria seeks to improve its aviation sector, the relocation of international airlines to the new terminal is a positive step towards offering passengers a more pleasant experience. By upgrading and expanding airport infrastructure, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria aims to enhance the country's status as a leading aviation hub in the region.
