After his inauguration on the afternoon of May 29, 2023, President Bola Tinubu attended a lunch at the State Banquet Hall with fellow Heads of State and country representatives. However, since then, he has not made the Aso Rock Presidential Villa his official residence.
The ongoing renovations, which began prior to Tinubu's inauguration, have resulted in a delay in his move. The maintenance work includes repainting worn-out sections and replacing furniture in various areas of the Villa. Former President Muhammadu Buhari shifted to a temporary residence named the Glass House while the renovations take place.
The delay in President Tinubu's move can also be attributed to individual preferences. Tinubu, like his predecessors, has the autonomy to decide on the type of furniture to be installed in his official residence. This process may require additional time.
In comparison to his predecessors, Tinubu's delay in moving into the official residence is noticeable. Former President Buhari moved into his new residence nearly three weeks after his inauguration. However, each situation is unique, and this delay may be due to major alterations being carried out or an increased need for repairs.
While President Tinubu utilizes his private conference room, office space, and the Aso Chambers for meetings, he has not yet made the official residence his home. Instead, his daily routine involves bypassing the official residence and heading to his private mansion in Maitama after work.
The delay in the President's move has raised questions about the functionality of the Aso Rock Chapel. The First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, clarified that there was no closure of the chapel, but rather a delay in appointing a new chaplain following the departure of the former chaplain, Seyi Malomo.
Despite the delay, the Aso Rock Chapel continues to hold weekly meetings, although the First Lady has not attended any worship sessions. Social media rumors suggesting the closure of the chapel have been dismissed as false.
It remains to be seen when President Bola Tinubu will finally move into his official residence at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa. The ongoing renovations, along with individual preferences and possible major alterations, have contributed to the delay. In the meantime, President Tinubu continues to carry out his presidential duties from other facilities within the Villa.
