Lagos witnessed an exceptional gathering of media professionals as the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) organized the inaugural Lateef Jakande annual memorial lecture to commemorate the life and achievements of the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande – a prominent figure in Nigerian journalism and politics. The event, themed 'Lateef Jakande: The Man, His Journalism, His Politics,' paid tribute to Jakande's enduring legacy.
The Banquet Hall of Sheraton Hotels and Towers, Ikeja, Lagos, was filled to capacity as distinguished personalities came together to celebrate Baba Kekere, as Alhaji Lateef Jakande was affectionately known. Esteemed veterans who spoke at the lecture reminisced about Jakande's virtues and the lasting impact he made within the world of journalism.
Eze Anaba, President of NGE, expressed the crucial role Jakande played in shaping modern journalism in Nigeria:
"Baba Kekere devoted his entire professional and political career to advancing the values of liberty and social justice. He exemplified the values of honesty, integrity, courage, and fairness. He told the stories of the powerless and held the powerful to account. He demonstrated commitment to our journalistic freedom and long-term survival."
The event featured speeches from several notable personalities, including Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State, who was represented by Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, his Deputy. Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted Jakande's profound impact on Lagos, stating:
"To immortalize him, our administration established the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy to unleash the potential of the next generation of leaders. The Academy will provide a platform for younger generations to embrace the ideals of responsive, responsible, and selfless leadership – qualities that Jakande exemplified."
The commemorations extended beyond Lagos, with Prince Dapo Abiodun, the Governor of Ogun State, emphasizing the relevance of Jakande's vision for policymakers in Africa. He praised Jakande's concept of democratic deliverables as a guide for urbanization and human capital development.
The international community also acknowledged Jakande's invaluable contributions. Frane Maroević, Executive Director of the International Press Institute (IPI), lauded Jakande's unwavering commitment to journalism and his dedication to public service. His enduring example continues to inspire present and future generations of journalists.
As Chairman of the occasion, Rtd. General Ike Nwachukwu shared heartfelt memories of his close bond with Jakande. He recounted their time together during his journalism training and how Jakande constantly inspired those around him.
The keynote address was delivered by Chief Felix Adenaike, with Bayo Osiyemi representing him as Jakande's former Chief Press Secretary. Adenaike described Jakande as a serious-minded individual, receptive to ideas, and actively involved in setting up crucial journalism institutions such as the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Nigeria Institute of Journalism, and Nigerian Guild of Editors.
Former Governor of Ogun State, Aremo Segun Osoba, shed light on Jakande's exceptional writing skills and hailed him as the first black man to head the International Press Institute. Osoba also highlighted Jakande's unparalleled commitment to grassroots politics and his accessibility to the people even during his time as governor.
In a heartfelt appeal, Seyi Jakande, one of Lateef Jakande's children, called upon the Lagos State Governor to reconsider renaming Lagos State University (LASU) after his father. He noted that Jakande's establishment of the university was deserving of this honor, especially considering similar institutions named after other second republic former Governors.
The memorial lecture portrayed Alhaji Lateef Jakande as a principled administrator, a beacon of democracy, and an influential figure in Nigerian journalism. His contributions to the field and his monumental impact on Lagos State will forever be remembered with admiration and gratitude.
