Nigeria's First Ultra-Fast Electric Vehicle Charging Station Unveiled in Abuja

Lagos, Nigeria - In the wake of Nigeria's energy crisis and skyrocketing fuel prices, the country is poised to embrace electric vehicles as the most sustainable and cost-effective solution to its mobility challenges. Possible EVS, an African automotive start-up, believes that the launch of Nigeria's first ultra-fast public electric vehicle charging station in Abuja will play a crucial role in revolutionizing the transportation sector and driving widespread adoption of electric vehicles.

According to Mosope Olaosebikan, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Possible EVS, Nigerians will begin to recognize electric vehicles as the ideal mobility solution due to the country's pressing energy crisis and escalating fuel costs. Olaosebikan reveals that the charging station's unveiling is a significant milestone in their mission to decarbonize transportation and foster the adoption of electric vehicles throughout Nigeria.

The new electric vehicle charging station, located at 7 Hombori Street, Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, Abuja, is poised to become a convenient and fast-charging hub for electric buses, taxis, and private vehicles. Its introduction aims to propel sustainable mobility and accelerate the widespread adoption of electric vehicles across the country.

According to a statement from Possible EVS, "For the first time in Nigeria, electric car owners have a publicly available fast-charging station where they can just drive in, plug their vehicles, and have it fully charged in just 20 to 30 minutes."

Olaosebikan highlights the tremendous growth of the global electric vehicle market, which witnessed sales surge from 120,000 cars in 2012 to approximately 6.6 million in 2021. By providing accessible and convenient EV charging facilities, Possible EVS aims to lead the green transport industry in Africa and foster the proliferation of electric vehicles.

Nigeria, with its annual population growth forecast of 2.5%, ranks among the world's ten largest countries. Additionally, the country possesses abundant renewable energy sources like solar and wind, positioning it as one of the most promising electric vehicle markets in Africa.

However, Nigeria faces a significant challenge of developing the necessary infrastructure to support the transition from internal combustion engine vehicles to fully electric and hybrid cars. With a deadline of 2060 to replace all fossil fuel-powered vehicles, the need for adequate charging infrastructure becomes increasingly crucial.

The newly unveiled Charging Hub in Abuja seeks to address this challenge. As the country's first public charging station, it symbolizes a tipping point for the proliferation of electric vehicles in Nigeria. Over the next six months, the ultra-fast charging facility will be free of charge, providing EV owners with a seamless and efficient charging solution for their vehicles.

Mosope Olaosebikan, the CEO of Possible EVS, expresses his excitement about the project and announces future plans to deploy 10,000 charging stations in public places and along highways across Nigeria within the next five years. This expansive initiative would facilitate convenient lithium-ion battery recharging for EV owners during their travels.

The Charging Hub boasts four superchargers, each capable of delivering up to 350 kW of power, enabling users to replenish their vehicles with approximately 100 miles (160 km) of range in less than 30 minutes. Additionally, an EV charging truck is available on demand.

Beyond its charging capabilities, the facility also features Nigeria's first digital museum, the Discovery Museum, along with four experiential dining spaces, a virtual reality gaming center, and an immersive escape room. EV drivers can take advantage of these amenities while their cars charge, making the overall charging experience more enjoyable and convenient.

With the launch of Nigeria's first ultra-fast electric vehicle charging station, Possible EVS aims to boost confidence among Nigerians in electric vehicle ownership. The availability of a convenient, publicly accessible charging station not only supports EV owners but also contributes to the country's journey towards 100% renewable energy in the transportation sector.
