Authoritarian, anti-people, exploitative, and irresponsible—a damning assessment of Nigeria's current leadership, according to Professor Adelaja Odukoya. This scathing critique came during his lecture at the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) colloquium in Ogun State.
Prof. Odukoya, a respected political science professor from the University of Lagos (UNILAG), expressed deep concern about the prevalence of electoral infractions and the lack of consequences for offenders. He argued that the failure to punish electoral offenders has only encouraged more people to disregard the law.
In his view, the current leadership's style is detrimental to Nigeria's democracy, emphasizing that Nigerian leaders are disconnected from the concerns and needs of the Nigerian people. He urged these leaders to change their approach or face the consequences of being "flushed out" by the people.
Furthermore, Prof. Odukoya called on political office holders to stop taking the people for granted. He stressed that any government serious about development and democracy should value and consider the opinions of its citizens. He emphasized that criticism from the people is essential for nurturing democracy and fostering development.
The sentiments expressed by Prof. Odukoya were echoed by the State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, who highlighted the importance of prioritizing public opinion. Governor Abiodun believes that public opinion management is crucial for establishing a sustainable democracy. He acknowledged the influential role played by the media and interest groups in shaping public opinion and influencing government policies and actions.
Represented by his deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Governor Abiodun emphasized that proper management of public opinion can build trust and contribute to a vibrant democratic society. His administration has actively initiated programs and policies aimed at creating an inclusive and participatory governance system, ensuring that the voices of the citizens are heard.
Ogun State Governor highlighted some of his administration's achievements, including the establishment of multiple housing estates for low and high-income earners, the development of a fully-equipped State hospital, and the promotion of a thriving tech industry. Additionally, foreign direct investment has increased in alignment with his ISEYA mantra, which prioritizes infrastructure, social welfare, education, youth empowerment, and agriculture.
In recognition of the role played by the NIPR in promoting the profession, the President and Chairman in Council, Mallam Mukhtar Sirajo, expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Ogun State chapter. The State Chairman of NIPR, Seun Boye, also urged civil society organizations, the media, and all Nigerians to champion democratic values.
Boye specifically called on PR practitioners to be unwavering in upholding the truth, promoting accuracy, and dispelling rumors to safeguard the integrity of Nigeria's democratic system.
The urgent need to address electoral infractions and prioritize public opinion management cannot be overstated. Nigeria's democracy hangs in the balance, with the current trend posing a significant threat. By holding electoral offenders accountable and genuinely valuing the opinions of the Nigerian people, the government can cultivate a sustainable democratic system that addresses the challenges faced by the nation.
