Middle Belt Forum Advises Tinubu to Tread Carefully in Niger Republic Crisis
The Middle Belt Forum (MBF) has urged President Bola Tinubu to exercise caution and avoid interference in the ongoing crisis in Niger Republic. With Nigerien citizens supporting the military coup and tensions escalating in the region, the MBF advises Tinubu and ECOWAS to tread carefully to avert any form of warfare and an avoidable humanitarian disaster.

Lagos: The Middle Belt Forum (MBF) has issued a statement cautioning President Bola Tinubu to avoid interfering in the ongoing crisis in Niger Republic. Following the military coup in Niger and subsequent ECOWAS ultimatum, the MBF emphasized the need for understanding the dynamics and complex relationship between the two neighboring countries.

The socio-cultural organization urged President Tinubu to exercise statesmanship and refrain from taking actions that could escalate tensions or lead to an avoidable war. The MBF highlighted the sympathy expressed by Nigeriens masses towards the military takeover in Niger Republic, stressing the importance of caution in dealing with the situation.

The MBF stated, "Nigeria should never allow itself to plunge into an avoidable war. The lesson of the coup should not be lost on leaders who deployed underhand dealings to assume leadership through compromising the electoral process."

Referring to the failed efforts of the delegation dispatched by the Nigerien President, the MBF outlined the severed diplomatic ties between the military junta and Nigeria, Togo, United States, and France. The MBF warned against the potential consequences of engaging the coupists and advocated for avoiding a war that could lead to unpredictable and disastrous outcomes for both countries.

Against the backdrop of war clouds and heightened tensions due to the seven-day ultimatum, the Forum called on President Tinubu to refrain from actions that may further escalate the crisis. The MBF noted the anger displayed by ordinary Nigerien citizens on the streets of Niamey and other cities in Niger Republic, cautioning against military action against the junta regime.

While advising Tinubu to focus his attention on addressing the various challenges facing Nigeria, including insecurity and the economic hardships faced by the populace, the MBF emphasized the need to tackle the monsters of insecurity and the withdrawal of fuel subsidies, which have plunged millions of Nigerians into despair.

As tensions rise and concerns regarding the Niger Republic crisis grow, the Middle Belt Forum's plea for caution serves as a reminder of the potential disastrous consequences of engaging in warfare and underlines the importance of proactively seeking peaceful resolutions to conflicts.
