The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) hosted a crucial sensitisation workshop on Data Privacy and Protection for Data Processors and Controllers. The workshop, held in Lagos, aimed to create awareness of the NDPC Act and educate participants on the importance of care and accountability in ensuring that data collected is fully protected and secured.
Dr Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner of the NDPC, explained that the purpose of the workshop was to sensitize data processors and controllers on the need to build confidence and trust in the Nigerian system. He stressed that implementing the NDPC Act would significantly contribute to attracting foreign investments to the country.
"With this law, we have been able to cross that stage and we know that an average investor coming to Nigeria will know that we have a law and we have an independent Data Protection Authority (DPA)," said Dr Olatunji.
He added that the workshop was a major milestone for the country, particularly under the current administration. The NDPC Act requires over 500,000 data processors and controllers in Nigeria to register with the NDPC.
Dr Olatunji highlighted the significance of Data Protection Officers (DPOs) and Data Protection Compliance Organisations (DPCOs) familiarizing themselves with the provisions of the law. The six-month period before the enforcement of the law will allow them to adapt to their new responsibilities.
The workshop on data privacy and protection will also be conducted in Abuja to further enhance awareness among data processors and controllers.
To ensure effective regulation, the NDPC intends to use various platforms and media outlets, including social media, to create awareness and encourage registration with the commission.
Dr Olatunji reiterated the need for the NDPC to keep track of registered DPOs and DPCOs, as this is vital for effective regulation and monitoring. Knowing the activities and data processing methods used by these entities is crucial for maintaining data privacy and protection standards.
According to the NDPC's plan, DPOs and DPCOs must register with the commission between now and December 31. From January 1 to March 31, 2024, they will be required to submit their annual audit reports and measures for safeguarding their databases.
In his keynote address, Dr Olatunji highlighted the numerous benefits of the NDPC Act. These include strengthening data security, building trust and consumer confidence, promoting business competitiveness, and ensuring compliance and accountability with international standards.
Dr Olatunji also emphasized the commission's potential to generate wealth and provide employment opportunities by creating about 500,000 digital jobs.
