Ogun House of Assembly Summons State Accountant-General and Joint Account Allocations Committee Members
The Ogun State House of Assembly has summoned the State Accountant-General and members of the Joint Account Allocations Committee to explain the current issues surrounding local government funds in the state. This move comes after allegations of fund diversion by the Governor surfaced, leading to protests in Ijebu East local government. The House seeks to investigate the matter thoroughly and address the concerns of the people.

ABEOkUTA - The Ogun State House of Assembly has taken a step to address the ongoing controversy surrounding local government funds in the state by summoning the State Accountant-General and members of the Joint Account Allocations Committee. The Speaker, Mr Olakunle Oluomo, issued the invitation during a plenary session in Abeokuta.

The purpose of this summons is to gather a thorough explanation from the invited individuals regarding the situation in local governments. The House aims to provide the people of the state with a comprehensive briefing and subsequently take necessary action based on their findings.

Speaker Oluomo emphasized the legislative power to investigate matters within the state, stating, "We have the power to investigate what's happening in our state and then do the needful." He also appealed for calm and urged the concerned parties to allow the House to fulfill its responsibilities. Highlighting the urgency of the matter, Oluomo invited the accountant-general of the state and all members of the joint account allocations committee to appear before the House at 1pm on Friday. Their presence is vital to shed light on the events unfolding in the local governments.

The controversy surrounding local government funds came to light when the Chairman of Ijebu East Local Government, Wale Adedayo, alleged that since Governor Dapo Abiodun assumed office, the 20 local governments have been operating without any allocation. In a letter addressed to former Governor Olusegun Osoba, which has since gone viral, Adedayo accused the governor of diverting the local government funds. He also reported the matter to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), urging them to investigate Governor Abiodun.

The state government, however, has refuted the allegations, clarifying that it has always provided additional funds to supplement the allocations. Despite the government's response, Adedayo was suspended by the legislators in his local government for three months, citing allegations of financial misappropriation. Interestingly, the suspension occurred as Adedayo was en route to the Department of State Services (DSS) office, where he had been invited for questioning on the same issues.

Ahead of the suspension, a detachment of police officers was seen stationed at the Ogbere headquarters of the local government, signaling the impending action against the Chairman.

The House of Assembly's decision to summon the State Accountant-General and members of the Joint Account Allocations Committee reflects their commitment to transparent governance and accountability. It marks a significant step towards uncovering the truth behind the allegations of local government fund diversion and ensuring justice prevails. The people of Ogun State eagerly await the outcome of this investigation, hopeful for clarification and action to set things right.
