Labour Party Leader Condemns Edo State Local Council Election
Labour Party leader for Edo Central Senatorial District, Engr. Christen Omofoma, has criticized the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission for conducting a local council election that he claims was marred by fraud and a blatant disregard for equity and the rule of law. He called on the international community and all stakeholders to come together to address the growing trend of election fraud in Nigeria and safeguard the gains made in democracy.

ABUJA - The recently conducted local council election in Edo State has come under severe criticism from the Labour Party (LP) leader for Edo Central Senatorial District, Engr. Christen Omofoma. In a strongly worded statement, he expressed his disappointment with the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (ASIEC) for what he described as a fraudulent election.

Engr. Omofoma accused ASIEC of imitating the "charade" that was the February 25 presidential election, which was marred by controversies and allegations of electoral malpractices. The LP leader claimed that the party had clear leads in various areas, including Ward 9 in Esan Central. However, the state electoral commission announced contrary results, raising concerns about the integrity of the election process.

He also highlighted that LP emerged victorious in polling unit 9, Ward 3, Okpoji, and other areas, suggesting that election irregularities were widespread. Engr. Omofoma lamented ASIEC's failure to live up to the expectations of the people and cautioned against undermining the progress made in Nigeria's democracy.

Labour Party's national chairman, Julius Abure, previously condemned the election and called on the state governor, Godwin Obaseki, to annul the results and conduct a fresh election. The current developments have raised concerns about the state of democracy in Nigeria, with Engr. Omofoma emphasizing that the actions of politicians are posing a threat to the country's democratic gains.

Calling for international intervention, Engr. Omofoma urged bodies such as ECOWAS, AU, and the UN to scrutinize the conduct of politicians in Nigeria and safeguard the nation's democracy. He also called on all stakeholders to unite in combating the growing trend of election fraud in the country.

In addition, Engr. Omofoma appealed to the state government to intervene and restore the confidence of the people in the election process. With Nigeria heading towards the 2023 general elections, it is crucial to address these concerns and ensure transparent and credible electoral processes.

The allegations made by the LP leader highlight the need for electoral reforms and increased vigilance to protect the democratic values of Nigeria. As the backbone of any democracy, fair and transparent elections are essential in upholding the rights and aspirations of the people.

It is hoped that the authorities will pay heed to Engr. Omofoma's concerns and take appropriate action to address the issues raised in the local council election. Upholding the principles of equity and the rule of law is imperative to maintain the integrity of Nigeria's democracy and regain the trust of the citizens.
