The Nigerian Shippers' Council (NSC) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) have joined forces to establish Consumer Protection Regime (CPR) guidelines. This collaboration aims to promote seamless port operations while safeguarding the rights of consumers. Through information sharing, investigations, and enforcement, the two agencies will address challenges faced by regulated service providers and users, working towards improved practices and efficiency in the shipping and ports sector in Nigeria. The upcoming CPR is designed to tackle infringements, ensure fair trade practices, and protect consumers.

The Nigerian Shippers' Council (NSC) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) have collaborated to develop Consumer Protection Regime (CPR) guidelines aimed at ensuring seamless port operations without the infringement of rights. This partnership was officially launched on January 20, 2022, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the FCCPC headquarters.

The collaboration between NSC and FCCPC intends to address the challenges faced by various service providers and users in the shipping and ports sector. By sharing information, conducting joint investigations, and enforcing compliance together, these agencies aim to create a consumer protection framework that encourages healthy competition and ensures fair trade practices.

The CPR guidelines will play a vital role in achieving seamless port operations by minimizing infringements on the rights of stakeholders. They will serve as a platform for disseminating sector-specific information and receiving feedback from stakeholders regarding infringements and areas that require improvement. By involving all relevant players, the goal is to build trust and confidence in the consumer protection system.

The shipping industry in Nigeria consists of multiple players who, in their daily transactions, may inadvertently or intentionally infringe upon each other's rights. The FCCPC Act ensures that consumers have certain rights, such as being informed about the quality, quantity, standards, and charges of services. Consumers also have the right to seek redress against unfair trade practices or exploitation within the shipping services sector.

Once the CPR becomes fully operational, it is expected to bring a positive shift in the behaviors and conduct of shipping and ports businesses across Nigeria. With a focus on protecting the welfare and rights of consumers, the collaboration between NSC and FCCPC will contribute to establishing harmony, fair trade practices, and efficiency within the shipping and ports sector.

Mr. Emmanuel Jime, the Executive Secretary of NSC, expressed the significance of prioritizing consumers and working together for their protection. He acknowledged that effective collaboration between the two agencies will eliminate competition for jurisdiction and facilitate a more coordinated approach to consumer protection.

Mr. Babatunde Irukera, the Executive Vice Chairman of FCCPC, emphasized the importance of always putting consumers first in all transactions. He commended the NSC for their collaboration and stressed the need to further enhance cooperation between the agencies to ensure effective consumer protection at all levels.

The partnership between NSC and FCCPC in developing CPR guidelines marks a significant step forward in promoting fair trade practices, compliance, and consumer protection in Nigeria's shipping and ports industry.
