The Nigerian Postal Services (NIPOST) has seen a dramatic decline in its revenue over the past three years, with turnover plummeting by 43.8% between 2019 and 2022. According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), NIPOST generated only N3 billion in 2022, compared to a five-year high of N5.37 billion in 2019.
This decline in revenue is a cause for concern, as it highlights the challenges and financial struggles faced by the postal service in recent years. One of the main contributing factors to this decline is the decrease in the number of post offices, postal agencies, and boxes installed. The NBS data revealed that the total number of post offices and postal agencies decreased by 19.43% from 2,794 in 2021 to 2,251 in 2022. Additionally, the total number of boxes installed decreased by 0.08% from 837,428 in 2021 to 836,731 in 2022.
Furthermore, the data showed that NIPOST is heavily dependent on income from charges on private couriers' operations. The revenue generated from EMS/Speedpost business decreased from N1.2 billion in 2021 to N838.8 million in 2022, while courier companies' license fees increased from N25.2 million to N209.7 billion during the same period. This 800% increase in courier companies' license fees indicates a shift in delivery services from four-wheel vehicles to motorcycles.
Another revenue source for NIPOST is the Business Venture Service, which saw an increase from N8.2 million in 2021 to N323.5 million in 2022. Although this is a positive development, it is not enough to offset the overall decline in revenue.
The decline in revenue for NIPOST raises concerns about the financial sustainability of the postal service. Without adequate funding, NIPOST may struggle to provide efficient and reliable postal services to the Nigerian population. The decrease in revenue also poses challenges for the expansion and modernization of the postal infrastructure, which is crucial for the development of e-commerce and other digital services in the country.
It is evident that NIPOST is facing significant financial challenges, and urgent measures need to be taken to address this issue. The Nigerian government should consider providing financial support to NIPOST to ensure the continued functioning of essential postal services. Additionally, there is a need for innovative strategies to increase revenue, such as exploring partnerships with private sector organizations and leveraging technology to improve efficiency and attract more customers.
In conclusion, the decline in revenue for NIPOST is a worrisome trend that highlights the financial struggles faced by the postal service. It is imperative for the Nigerian government and relevant stakeholders to take action to ensure the financial sustainability and efficient operation of NIPOST, which plays a vital role in facilitating communication and commerce within the country.
