President of World Medical Association Advocates for Health System Strengthening and Universal Health Coverage in Edo State
Dr. Osahon Enabulele, President of the World Medical Association (WMA), visited Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, to discuss the importance of a strong health system, resilient workforce, and universal health coverage. He commended the governor for his efforts in various areas and called for urgent attention to the challenges faced by the state's health sector. The WMA President also invited the governor to the 76th General Assembly of the WMA, scheduled for October this year.

Lagos - Dr. Osahon Enabulele, President of the World Medical Association (WMA), recently visited Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, to advocate for a strong health system, a resilient workforce, and the importance of universal health coverage (UHC). During his visit, Dr. Enabulele expressed his gratitude towards the governor, the executive council, the Oba of Benin, and the people of Edo State for their support and encouragement in his role as the WMA President.

The WMA President briefed Governor Obaseki on his efforts to fulfill his mandate, which included advocating for health system strengthening, universal health coverage, medical ethics, patient-centered care, and support for WMA constituent members. He commended the governor's achievements in civil service reforms, sports development, electricity and power generation, technology, and digital transformation.

Dr. Enabulele also expressed his delight at the recent victory of Bendel Insurance Football Club in the Nigeria Federation Cup, attributing the success to the state government's commitment to sports. He called on the governor to address the existing challenges in the state's health sector, particularly the strengthening of the health system and the motivation of healthcare professionals.

The WMA President seized the opportunity to extend a formal invitation to Governor Obaseki to the 76th General Assembly of the WMA, scheduled to take place in October this year. He also invited Dr. Udoka Imoisili, the Chairman of the Edo State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association, to make a presentation to the governor.

In response, Governor Obaseki expressed his gratitude for the visit and praised Dr. Enabulele's progressive strides as the WMA President. He acknowledged the WMA President's efforts in health system strengthening and universal health coverage, and assured his physical attendance at the 76th General Assembly of the WMA, accompanied by members of his government.

The governor pledged his commitment to strengthening the state's health system and addressing the demands brought forward by the Edo State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association. He proposed organizing a special workshop to reposition the state's health system.

The successful visit was attended by other top government officials, including the Deputy Governor, Secretary to the State Government, Chief of Staff, Commissioner for Health, Commissioner for Information and Communication, and heads of agencies.

Before meeting with the governor, Dr. Enabulele held a Presidential Roundtable with resident doctors at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, where he introduced the World Medical Association and its mission to the doctors.
