The drop in revenue can be attributed to several factors. First and foremost, the decrease in the number of post offices is a grave concern. From 2,794 post offices and postal agencies in 2021, the number decreased by 19% to 2,251 in 2022. This reduction in physical access points for postal services has undoubtedly impacted NIPOST's revenue.

However, amidst this decline, there is a glimmer of hope. Although there are fewer post offices, the number of mail received from abroad and delivered in Nigeria saw a significant increase of 107% from 9.4 million in 2019 to 19.5 million in 2022. This surge can be attributed to the growing e-commerce industry and the reliance on international shipping for goods.

One of the notable success stories within NIPOST's services is the remarkable growth of Postcash. This electronic money order service witnessed a staggering revenue increase of 3,424% from N458,546 in 2019 to N16.16 million in 2022. This success indicates the potential for innovative services within the postal industry.

Despite these positive aspects, the overall decline in revenue raises concern about the future of the Nigerian Postal Service. In August 2021, the government announced plans to unbundle NIPOST into three subsidiary companies: a property company, a microfinance bank, and a transport and logistics company. The intention was to revamp the agency and foster its commercialization.

However, this move led to dissatisfaction among NIPOST workers who protested against the "irregularities" in the reform process. The workers claimed that the transformation lacked transparency and resulted in a state of uncertainty within the agency. Addressing these concerns and ensuring transparency in the reform process is essential for regaining employee trust and motivation.

As the decline of NIPOST continues, it is crucial for the government and stakeholders to assess the challenges faced by the postal service and devise effective strategies. This could include exploring new revenue streams, enhancing digitalization efforts, and improving service quality.
