The Urgent Call for Essential Commodity Distribution in Nigeria
The Nigerian Citizens Welfare Project (NCWP) has called on the government to re-implement the distribution of essential commodities to alleviate the hardships caused by the removal of petrol subsidies. They propose using the National Identification Number (NIN) to identify families and provide subsidized food items. Additionally, transportation cards and increased availability of buses could help lower transportation costs. These measures aim to stabilize the economy and provide relief to Nigerian citizens in these challenging times.

The Nigerian Citizens Welfare Project (NCWP) has urged the government to urgently re-enact the era of essential commodity distribution to the people. This call comes as Federal and state governments explore alternative strategies to cushion the impact of the recent removal of petrol subsidies.

The NCWP, led by its Director General, Esanerovo Agbodo, proposes the use of the National Identification Number (NIN) to identify Nigerian families selected randomly across the country. These families would then receive subsidized food items on a monthly basis. This measure aims to drive down the prices of food over the next two years while the government focuses on supporting farmers to ensure food security.

To address transportation costs, the NCWP recommends printing and distributing transportation cards or vouchers nationwide. These cards would be implemented in partnership with the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and other willing Nigerians to reduce costs for farm produce, educational materials, students, and other essential services.

Furthermore, the NCWP suggests gradually increasing the number of interstate and intrastate buses to lower transport fares. While it may take time and significant resources to bridge the transportation gap, utilizing existing vehicles can provide immediate relief until locally manufactured and imported buses become available.

The urgent implementation of these measures seeks to stabilize the system and alleviate the current economic hardship faced by Nigerians. Merely increasing the minimum wage for civil servants without addressing the underlying challenges could exacerbate inflation and further burden citizens. Therefore, it is crucial to prioritize these proposed strategies.

In conclusion, the Nigerian Citizens Welfare Project's plea for the revival of essential commodity distribution, utilizing the NIN for family identification and subsidizing food items, along with the introduction of transportation cards and increased availability of buses, aims to provide relief to the Nigerian population amidst the removal of petrol subsidies. These measures will contribute to stabilizing the economy and mitigating the hardships currently faced by citizens.
