Newly Appointed Special Investigator to Probe CBN Refutes Allegations of Financial Impropriety
Jim Obazee, the newly appointed special investigator to probe the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and related entities, has denied allegations of financial impropriety and corruption. Obazee asserts that the negative narratives being circulated are baseless and aimed at tarnishing his reputation. Through his lawyer, he challenges the peddlers of these allegations to produce any criminal charges or convictions against him. He clarifies that the only legal matter concerning him is an employment-related civil suit. Obazee's appointment comes after President Bola Tinubu appointed him to conduct a thorough investigation into the CBN.

Lagos - The recent appointment of Mr. Jim Obazee as the special investigator to probe the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and its related entities has sparked controversy and unleashed a barrage of negative narratives against him. However, in a swift response, Obazee has categorically denied any form of financial impropriety and corruption, dismissing the campaign against him as lacking substance and truth.

Speaking through his lawyer, Mr. Anayo Mbah, Obazee vehemently refuted the allegations, claiming that they are malicious and intended to tarnish his hard-earned reputation. He emphasized that these negative narratives are a calculated attempt to present him as a corrupt and fraudulent individual during his tenure of public service.

Obazee's lawyer challenged those spreading the false and malicious statements to provide evidence of any criminal charges or convictions against his client in any court of law in Nigeria. He boldly stated, "We challenge the peddlers of the false and malicious statements to produce the Petition(s) and Criminal Charge(s) filed against Mr. Obazee as well as the judgment(s) of Court convicting or sentencing him for any such criminal offenses."

Furthermore, Obazee clarified that the only legal matter concerning him is an employment-related civil suit filed at the National Industrial Court. The suit was brought by an employee of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN) against the organization, with Obazee joined as a party due to his role as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the time. He revealed that judgment has already been given in the case, and both FRCN and himself have filed appeals against the decision.

Contrary to the allegations circulating in the media, there is no credible evidence pointing to any criminal charges or convictions against Obazee. He described the news as "totally malicious and false."

The news peddlers behind these publications further claimed that Obazee was involved in corruption, including siphoning public funds into his own pocket, accepting bribes to recommend the federal takeover of banks, and orchestrating the removal of Lamido Sanusi as CBN Governor. However, they failed to mention any specific petitions, petitioners, or case files related to these allegations.

Obazee's lawyer stated that they are eagerly awaiting further details from the news peddlers, but as of now, no concrete evidence has been presented to support their sensationalized claims. He suggested that this campaign of calumny against Obazee stems from his refusal to be compromised or lured away from the truth by those trying to influence him.

Highlighting Obazee's professional background, his lawyer emphasized that he is a renowned consultant and global expert in international financial reporting. He previously served as the Executive Secretary/CEO of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC), chaired the International Standards of Accounting and Reporting (ISAR) of the United Nations, led the National Committee on Road Map to the Adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in Nigeria, and was recently appointed as a Special Investigator by the President of Nigeria, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the CBN.

Given Obazee's extensive experience and expertise in the financial sector, his appointment as the special investigator signifies the government's commitment to transparency and accountability within the CBN and related entities. As the investigation unfolds, it remains crucial to separate baseless allegations from concrete evidence.

The presumption of innocence must prevail, and any substantiated claims of financial impropriety should be objectively addressed. Obazee's denial, backed by his impeccable record of accomplishment, demands a fair and unbiased assessment of the situation.
