The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed deep disappointment with the government's recent N5 billion palliative scheme, claiming that the funds allocated would not even suffice for a single local government council. The NLC President, Joe Ajaero, vehemently criticized the policy, stating that the removal of fuel subsidy was akin to waging a war against the poor.
Ajaero made these remarks during the NLC national symposium themed 'Nigeria Economy and the Crisis of Survival: Robbing the Poor to Pay the Rich.' He accused the government of favoring the ruling class, particularly state governors, while disregarding the welfare of the poor masses.
According to Ajaero, "The palliatives which the Federal Government was giving to a whole state is barely enough to adequately cater for just one local government area in a state." He further emphasized the disproportionate distribution of resources, alleging that governors were diverting funds meant for the poor and workers for personal gain.
Expressing his frustration, Ajaero stated, "What is happening in the country today is clearly a class war between us, the dispossessed, and those that have. They want to continue to have, whether it is the issue of subsidy or whatever. So, it is clearly a war against the poor. I have not seen such wickedness against the poor anywhere as seen in Nigeria today."
In response to the N5 billion allocation to states, the NLC President argued that it would hardly make a significant impact. He calculated that when divided among the approximately 133 million Nigerians classified as multi-dimensionally poor, each person would receive less than ₦1,500. Ajaero criticized the decision to entrust the distribution of palliatives to state governors, asserting that it privileges the ruling elite over the welfare of workers.
Highlighting the widening gap between the rich and the poor, Ajaero lamented the disappearance of the middle class and the lack of favorable government policies that benefit the majority. He criticized the unequal treatment of workers compared to bourgeoisies who continuously receive subsidies, import waivers, and increasing allowances.
Ajaero criticized the government's lack of a social safety net and the dire situation faced by Nigerian workers. He pointed out the absence of reliable transportation systems, affordable housing, and decent wages. The NLC President called for urgent action to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, emphasizing the need for a conscious effort to improve the welfare of all citizens.
In conclusion, Ajaero expressed his disappointment with the government's lack of commitment to worker welfare and their failure to address concerns raised by the NLC. He urged the government to prioritize the well-being of Nigerian workers and citizens as a whole.
