Nigeria Ensures Airspace Safety ahead of ICAO Audit
Nigeria's airspace safety facilities are prepared for the visit by ICAO officials to commence an audit of the country's aviation sector. The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has conducted validation flights and calibration of navigational aids, ensuring compliance with ICAO standards. The agency has also reviewed and submitted required documents for approval, and boosted critical manpower at major airports. The NAMA boss emphasized the unity and collaboration needed for achieving set goals.

Nigeria's airspace safety facilities are in top gear as the country prepares for the visit of officials from the International Civil Aviation (ICAO) Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP). The audit is expected to commence next week and will evaluate the country's aviation sector.

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has taken several measures to ensure compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs). Calibration of navigational aids at major airports has been completed, while newly installed ones in Maiduguri and Minna airports have been commissioned. Validation flights of Instrument Flight Procedures have also been conducted at all international airports in the country.

According to Engr Tayib Odunowo, the Managing Director of NAMA, all required documents, including Aeronautical Information Publications (AIP), Operation Manuals, MOUs with other agencies, and Service Level Agreements (SLAs), have been reviewed and forwarded to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) for approval. In addition, critical manpower has been boosted at major airports across the country.

Engr Odunowo expressed satisfaction with the preparedness and compliance level of the agency ahead of the audit. He highlighted the upgrades made to navigational aids at several airports, including Mallam Aminu Kano Airport, Kano; Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The NAMA boss commended the dedication and commitment of the agency's staff in closing identified gaps in safety-critical and operational areas. He emphasized the need for units and departments to work in synergy and harmony, stating that only a united NAMA can ensure the achievement of set goals and objectives.

The audit process will involve inspecting various facilities, including the Total Radar Coverage of Nigeria (TRACON) sites, control towers, mobile control towers, the Air Traffic Control 3-D Tower Simulator at Centrex Lagos, and administrative offices. Additionally, ongoing projects were assessed during the inspection.

Odunowo urged contractors to ensure the speedy completion of the ongoing projects, emphasizing the importance of timely execution.

The efforts taken by the NAMA in ensuring the safety and compliance of Nigeria's airspace demonstrate the country's commitment to upholding international aviation standards. The upcoming ICAO audit will provide an opportunity to assess the sector's preparedness and identify areas for improvement.

The successful audit will not only enhance the reputation of Nigeria's aviation sector but also contribute to the overall safety and efficiency of air travel in the region. By aligning with ICAO standards, Nigeria can position itself as a reliable and compliant player in the global aviation industry.

Overall, the proactive measures taken by NAMA reflect the dedication and professionalism of Nigeria's aviation sector. Collaborative efforts between agencies, as well as continuous investments in infrastructure and human resources, are crucial for maintaining a safe and secure airspace.

As the ICAO audit approaches, the Nigerian aviation industry looks forward to showcasing its commitment to safety, operational excellence, and international compliance.
