The owner of a two-storey building in Abuja has been arrested following the collapse of the structure. Two people lost their lives, and 37 others were taken to the hospital. The FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike, visited the scene and ordered the arrest of the building owner. He also directed the payment of medical bills for those affected. In a tragic turn of events, a two-storey building in Abuja collapsed, resulting in the loss of two lives and injuries to several others. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike, visited the scene and took immediate action.
Expressing his disappointment at the lack of due diligence in adhering to minimum construction standards, Wike ordered the arrest of the building owner. This incident highlights the importance of proper city planning and adherence to safety regulations to prevent such accidents.
The FCT Emergency Management Agency (FCT FEMA) reported that 37 individuals were evacuated and taken to the hospital for treatment. Wike wasted no time in directing the Permanent Secretary, FCT Administration, Mr Adesola Olusade, to ensure prompt payment of medical bills for those hospitalized.
The Department of Development Control under the FCT Administration has been urged to take immediate action to resettle the affected residents of the community. This step is crucial to provide them with the necessary support and ensure their well-being.
Speaking at the site of the collapse, Wike called on stakeholders to collaborate wholeheartedly with government officials to prevent such incidents in the future. He emphasized the significance of following construction regulations to safeguard lives and property.
The Director of Development Control, Mr Mukhtar Galadima, disclosed that the area where the building stood was unplanned and housed an indigenous community. The structure served both residential and commercial purposes, indicating a clear violation of zoning regulations.
The Permanent Secretary, Mr Adesola Olusade, commended the security agencies and contractors who swiftly joined the rescue effort. Their tireless work in evacuating the debris and searching for survivors played a significant role in mitigating further losses.
FCT FEMA's Director-General, Dr Idriss Abass, assured the public that rescue operations were ongoing. Every effort is being made to locate any individuals who might still be trapped under the rubble.
Victims of the tragic incident expressed their devastation at losing their investments and belongings. One of them, Ms Glory Perekeme, operated a restaurant and bar in the building, estimating her losses at around N5 million. She appealed for assistance from the government to help her rebuild her business.
Another victim, Mrs Ann Anyi, who ran a laundry and shoe store, expressed immense sadness at losing everything. She clung to the hope that she might salvage something from the wreckage once the rescue mission concluded.
This unfortunate building collapse serves as a dire reminder of the critical importance of proper construction practices and adherence to safety codes. The arrest of the building owner sends a strong message that negligence will not be tolerated when it comes to public safety. The FCT Administration must take decisive action to prevent further such incidents and safeguard the lives and livelihoods of its citizens.
