Labour Party's Lawyer Warns of Controversial Means to Seek Justice in Election Disputes
Livy Uzoukwu, the lawyer of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP), has expressed concerns over the challenges faced by election petitioners in establishing their cases. He warned that if obstacles from government institutions like the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) persist, dissatisfied parties may resort to unlawful means to seek justice. Uzoukwu vowed to appeal the tribunal's verdict and emphasized the need to protect Nigeria's electoral jurisprudence.

FCT, Abuja - Livy Uzoukwu, the lawyer of Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, has warned that in cases when those who are dissatisfied with the outcome of elections continue to find it difficult to establish their case, they may resort to controversial channels of getting justice. Uzoukwu warned that the means "may not be lawful".

Speaking after the tribunal's judgment was delivered on Wednesday, September 6, the senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN) vowed to appeal the verdict which upheld the election of President Bola Tinubu, Vanguard reported.

Uzoukwu stressed that petitioners may resort to self-help if they continue to find it very difficult to establish their case "owing to obstacles from government institutions like the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)".

The Punch quotes him as saying:

"If we are not careful, our electoral jurisprudence will eventually disappear. I am saying this with every amount of sincerity because when the litigant, when those who contested the election continue to find it very difficult to establish their case due to obstacles on the way, starting with INEC, certainly they may resort to some other means of trying to get justice, which may not be lawful."

In a piece of related news, Legit.ng reported that President Bola Tinubu welcomed the verdict of the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT).

The president's mood was conveyed in a press statement by Ajuri Ngelale, his spokesperson, obtained by Legit.ng.

In the release, President Tinubu also called for collective efforts to build Nigeria.

Videos have emerged showing Tinubu celebrating the PEPT's judgement which affirmed him as Nigeria's president.

In a video sighted by Legit.ng, Tinubu's appointees and associates chanted the popular 'On Your Mandate We Shall Stand' slogan as the Nigerian leader shook hands with them.
