DAMATURU IPAC Resolves Controversy over Local Government Elections in Yobe State
The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Yobe State has come to a resolution regarding the controversy surrounding the conduct of Local Government Elections by the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC). IPAC has united and reached a consensus to request the suspension of the upcoming November Local Government Election due to time constraints and economic difficulties faced by the political parties involved.

DAMATURU - The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has finally united and resolved the controversy over the conduct of Local Government Elections by the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC).

Secretary of IPAC in Yobe State, Abdullahi Bello informed Journalists in Damaturu that "Follow up to our recent press release issued out which we opposed the shifting the upcoming Local Government Elections in Yobe State.

"We wish to inform our teaming supporters and party members that we took that decision owing to the fact that none of our parties was invited or informed of the meeting that IPAC held to take that decision; we just saw it in the news. Despite the fact that some of us are among the elected executive members of IPAC.

"Hence, the decision to summon another meeting on Friday 8th September, 2023 in our meeting of today after making extensive consultations, we the undersigned political parties unanimously agreed to call on Yobe State Government to suspend the forthcoming November Local Government Election based on the following reasons:

  • Time constraint and economic hardship under which our parties cannot prepare to face the elections without a hitch.
  • It is the end of the rainy season, harvest time, and food transportation from the farms. This may constrain our supporters from participating fully in the campaign and election activities.
  • We wish to preserve the integrity of all political parties involved.

"Our sincere gratitude and salutation to the Executive Governor of Yobe State Hon. Mai Mala Buni for the all-inclusive policies of his administration. We hope and pray that your Government will accept the decision to shift the Local Government Election to another appropriate date," added Abdullahi Bello.

This resolution by IPAC addresses concerns raised about the lack of inclusivity and transparency in the decision-making process regarding the Local Government Elections. The opposition parties felt sidelined and were unaware of the meeting where the decision was made, leading to their initial opposition.

Now, with the consensus reached by the political parties, they request the Yobe State Government to suspend the November Local Government Election due to time constraints and economic challenges faced by the parties involved. The end of the rainy season and the busy harvest time make it difficult for their supporters to actively participate in the campaigns and election activities.

This decision showcases the unity and collaboration among the political parties in Yobe State. It also highlights the importance of considering practical factors that could affect the success and fairness of an election. By prioritizing the well-being and participation of citizens, the parties aim to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

As IPAC's resolution is officially communicated to the Yobe State Government, the hope is that the government will accept the request and work towards finding an appropriate date to reschedule the Local Government Election. This will provide the political parties the necessary time and resources to adequately prepare for the election and maximize participation from their supporters.
