Delta Governor Urges Greater Cooperation Between Delta and Edo States for Development
Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, has called for greater cooperation between Delta and Edo states to ensure speedy development. The call was made at a colloquium to mark the 60th anniversary of the creation of the Midwestern Region of Nigeria. The governor emphasized the need for harmonious co-existence and proposed the establishment of a council comprising representatives from both states to focus on a development roadmap.

Lagos, August 29th - The Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, has urged for increased cooperation between Delta and Edo states to accelerate the development of both regions. His call was made during a colloquium organized to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the creation of the Midwestern Region of Nigeria, later renamed Bendel State.

The theme of the colloquium, '60 Years After the Referendum, Which Way Midwest?', reflected on the history and the shared values of the people in the region. Governor Oborevwori emphasized the importance of the strong relationship between the two states and proposed the establishment of a council composed of individuals from both regions to regularly meet and focus on implementing a development roadmap that would contribute to their socio-economic progress.

In his address, the governor recalled the historic referendum that led to the creation of the Midwest Region. He highlighted that the region was created through a transparently free and fair democratic process, with an overwhelming majority of 89.07% voting in favor of opting out of the Western Region.

Governor Oborevwori commended the peaceful conduct of the referendum and contrasted it with present-day elections, which often witness violence in some parts of the country. He stressed the need to pay homage to the founding fathers of the Midwest Region, acknowledging their sacrifices and the successful struggle to liberate the region from the Western Region.

The governor also pointed out that the subsequent division of Bendel State into Edo and Delta states by military fiat did not affect the strong bond between the people of both regions. He highlighted the continued cultural, marital, and social ties between the communities, as well as the absence of discrimination in property ownership on either side of the divide.

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, also present at the colloquium, expressed his pleasure at commemorating such a momentous occasion. He emphasized that the event provided an opportunity for reflection and the exchange of ideas that could guide the future progress of the states.

Several other notable personalities, including Senator Adams Oshiomole, Deputy Chief of Staff Sir Christopher Osakwe, and Rt. Hon. Funkekeme Solomon, also made valuable contributions at the colloquium.

Overall, the colloquium served as a platform for celebrating the history and shared values of Delta and Edo states, reaffirming the need for cooperation and collaboration between the two regions to facilitate their ongoing development.
