Kano State Governor Promises Rehabilitation and Empowerment for Repentant Criminals
Kano State Governor, Mr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, pledges to rehabilitate and empower 100 repentant criminals presented to him by the state Command of the Nigeria Police. The governor commends the initiative by the State Commissioner of Police, stressing the importance of unity and collaboration in addressing security challenges. He promises to engage the youths and restore street lights to enhance security in Kano State.

Kano State Governor, Mr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, has made a significant commitment to rehabilitating and empowering repentant criminals in the state. This announcement comes after the state Command of the Nigeria Police presented 100 repentant thugs to the governor.

The presentation took place during the closing ceremony of the maiden Community Policing Friendly Football Games, held at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano. The State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Usaini Gumel, was responsible for the initiative.

In a statement delivered on behalf of the governor by AVM Ibrahim Umar (rtd), Director-General, Special Services, Government House, the governor commended the Police Commissioner for initiating such an innovative approach to crime-fighting. He recognized the importance of unity, harmony, and collaboration in achieving stability and progress for Kano State.

The Governor highlighted the fact that upon accepting the 100 repentant criminals, the state government would profile them and provide them with life-changing programs. These would be sponsored by the state government, with the aim of ensuring the reintegration of these individuals into society.

The Governor's commitment to rehabilitating and empowering the repentant criminals aligns with his vision of engaging the youth for the development and progress of Kano State. Since assuming office, Governor Yusuf has prioritized working with security agencies to address emerging security challenges in the state.

In his address, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Gumel, emphasized that the Community Policing Friendly Football Games were organized to foster peace and unity in Kano State. He acknowledged the prevalence of armed robbery, phone snatching, and other violent crimes when he assumed duty.

Gumel stressed the importance of synergy among stakeholders in curbing criminal activities. These stakeholders include the judiciary, the media, traditional rulers, NGOs, religious leaders, Kannywood (the Hausa language movie industry), and sister security agencies.

Furthermore, Gumel called on society not to stigmatize the repentant criminals but instead support their reintegration. The repentant criminals have committed to turning away from a life of crime. Gumel's message conveys hope, emphasizing the importance of second chances and the potential for change.

Governor Yusuf's commitment to rehabilitating and empowering the repentant criminals is a positive step towards addressing the challenges of crime in Kano State. By providing opportunities for these individuals to integrate into society, the state government is taking a proactive approach to reducing crime and ensuring a safer environment for its residents.

One of the key issues identified by the Governor is the restoration of street lights, which have been non-functional for eight years. The lack of street lighting has contributed to an increase in crimes, particularly mobile phone armed robberies during night hours at junctions and roundabouts within Kano metropolis.

By restoring the street lights, the state government aims to improve visibility, deter criminals, and create a safer environment for residents and visitors alike. This initiative will contribute to the overall efforts toward addressing security challenges and fostering peace and unity within Kano State.

The rehabilitation and empowerment of repentant criminals, combined with initiatives to enhance security infrastructure, highlight the commitment of the Kano State Government to the welfare and safety of its people. It sets an example for other states to follow in their quest for a peaceful and prosperous society.
