Justice Chima Centus Nweze, an Esteemed Nigerian Supreme Court Justice, Passes Away at 64
Justice Chima Centus Nweze, a prominent Nigerian Supreme Court Justice known for his principled stances, has tragically passed away at the age of 64. His legacy as an independent and insightful jurist will be remembered and admired by legal scholars and practitioners alike.

ABUJA, Nigeria - Justice Chima Centus Nweze, an esteemed figure in Nigerian law and a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, died at 64.

His family has not commented publicly on his death; however, a reliable source revealed that he passed away on Sunday, July 30, 2023, following a brief illness.

Born on September 25, 1958, in Obollo, Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Justice Nweze rose to prominence in Nigerian legal circles and was renowned for his principled stances.

Perhaps most famously, Justice Nweze delivered a dissenting judgment in 2020, which declared Emeka Ihedioha of the People Democratic Party winner of the 2019 Governorship election in Imo State. This decision stood in opposition to the majority of the panel.

Justice Nweze also made headlines as the Justice who refused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar's request to inspect the Independent National Electoral Commission's server while challenging President Muhammadu Buhari's victory in the 2019 election.

In another significant decision, Justice Nweze delivered a controversial judgment in a split decision of three against two, which declared then Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, as the authentic candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Yobe North Senatorial District for the 25 February general election.

Appointed to the Supreme Court in 2014 by former President Goodluck Jonathan, following a recommendation by the National Judicial Council (NJC), Justice Nweze's tenure was marked by independence, insight, and a commitment to the rule of law.

His sudden demise leaves a void in the Nigerian judiciary, and his legacy will continue to be studied and admired by legal scholars, practitioners, and those who believe in justice. Justice Nweze's influence on key political and legal decisions will be a hallmark of his distinguished career.

As the nation awaits more details and a formal statement from his family, tributes and condolences from the legal community and beyond are expected to pour in, honoring a man who dedicated his life to upholding the principles of justice and integrity in his homeland.
