The Nigerian Law Society (NLS) has recently come into existence as a professional association of lawyers called to the Nigerian Bar. According to the National Publicity Secretary of NLS, Bayo Akinlade, the society's formation is not meant to compete with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), but rather to redefine the principles and values established by the founding fathers of the legal profession in Nigeria.
While there have been speculations about the motives behind the establishment of NLS, Akinlade emphasized that the society has its distinct aims and objectives. He pointed out that other associations, such as the Christian Law Students Fellowship of Nigeria and the Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria, are also having their conferences.
Akinlade clarified that being a member of NLS does not prevent him from belonging to other associations, including the NBA. He stated, "We are not a cult or an association that is contrary to the ethics of the legal profession or the 1999 Constitution."
Highlighting the differences between NLS and NBA, Akinlade explained that the standards and ethical requirements of NLS are not solely based on those of NBA. He emphasized that the NLS does not view itself as being in competition with the NBA because it is not a business entity; instead, it is an association of individuals with recognized integrity in society.
The NLS is set to hold its inaugural conference on July 28. The conference will provide a platform for legal professionals to discuss and address the evolving needs and challenges of the legal profession in Nigeria. It aims to foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation among legal practitioners.
With Kunle Ogunba (SAN) as its President, NLS is poised to bring together lawyers who have demonstrated a high level of integrity and commitment to the legal profession. The society intends to embrace new ideas, technology, and best practices to drive positive change in the legal sector.
While NLS and NBA might coexist as professional associations, their unique approaches and perspectives contribute to the diversity and growth of the legal profession in Nigeria. The emergence of NLS signifies a new chapter in the legal landscape and highlights the need for continuous adaptation and improvement.
As the NLS prepares to hold its inaugural conference, legal practitioners and stakeholders eagerly await the outcomes and contributions of this new professional association in redefining the legal profession in Nigeria.
