Lagos - All international airlines operating from the old terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos have successfully relocated to the new terminal commissioned in 2023. This relocation marks a significant milestone in the ongoing rehabilitation efforts by the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
Previously, chaos and inconvenience were prevalent at the airport due to the simultaneous operation of airlines from both the old and new terminals. However, with the relocation, the situation has greatly improved and the airport operations are now better organized.
Following the directive of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, FAAN ensured that all airlines operating from the old international terminal completed their relocation on or before October 1, 2023. At present, at least seven airlines have successfully operated from the new terminal, including prominent carriers such as Virgin Atlantic Airways, Qatar Airways, and Royal Air Maroc.
As part of the effort to enhance passenger experience, FAAN, in collaboration with some of its clients, has provided shuttle buses to transport passengers from the check-in area to the aircraft. Additional shuttle buses have been supplied by Air Peace, the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) PLC, and other operators to support FAAN in this endeavor.
Expressing his apologies on behalf of FAAN, Mr. Ayodele Sunday, the MMIA Regional Manager, South-West, acknowledged the inconveniences faced by passengers and stakeholders during the relocation process. He clarified that the terminal relocation had originally been planned in multiple phases. However, a fire incident that occurred earlier propelled the authority to expedite the full relocation of all airlines.
Mr. Sunday highlighted: "We want to use this opportunity to apologize to the travelling public, the airlines, and the public for the inconveniences they have been going through in the last few days. But, it is something that we must do and people must move."
In order to streamline operations and ensure a smooth process, FAAN has implemented strict access regulations for the new terminal. Only passengers are permitted to enter the terminal building, while those accompanying travelers are advised to refrain from entering and facilitate their family members alone.
Ojali Fatusi, the Terminal Manager, Airport 2, FAAN, confirmed that the agency has taken control of the situation and installed the necessary facilities to facilitate seamless passenger facilitation. However, she emphasized the need for training staff members of the airlines and ground handling companies on the proper use of these facilities.
Furthermore, Ms. Fatusi emphasized the importance of minimizing the presence of non-traveling individuals at the new terminal, in order to prioritize the needs of passengers. FAAN is implementing measures, such as relocating non-travelers further away from the terminal, to ensure that passenger requirements and experiences are prioritized.
The new terminal at Lagos' Murtala Muhammed International Airport is capable of processing approximately 39,000 users on a daily basis. It is equipped with modern facilities aimed at delivering an improved airport experience for travelers. As the aviation industry continues to evolve and grow, this relocation serves as a significant step towards enhancing efficiency and passenger satisfaction at one of Africa's busiest airports.
