In a bid to tackle the challenges posed by smuggling and foster cross-border trade, the Acting Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has affirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to partner with the Benin Republic Customs. The two-day interactive session held in Abuja was aimed at further strengthening the bilateral trade ties and cooperation between the two countries.
The collaborative effort between the Nigeria Customs Service and Benin Republic Customs will pave the way for a comprehensive mechanism to harmonize import prohibition lists. This move will streamline trade activities and enhance trade facilitation between the two nations. The Acting CGC expressed gratitude to the Benin Customs and the country's Embassy for their interest in collaborating with the Nigeria Customs Service, which will ultimately contribute to the improvement of trade facilitation.
"The Customs administration in both countries have a very good idea and technical know-how on what it means with trade; thus, we are back with a renewed enthusiasm to foster our relationship and make an impact on our trade facilitation roadmap," said the Acting CGC.
With the increasing global security challenges, a synergistic relationship between the customs administrations of Nigeria and Benin Republic is essential. Adeniyi emphasized that the intended mutualism will boost their relationship and improve the economy of both nations.
During the interactive session, discussions revolved around addressing issues related to trade and proposing strategies that will enhance the economy and revenue of both countries. The focus was primarily on transit issues and the implementation of progressive measures. The collaborative effort aims to design new strategies that will effectively combat smuggling and enhance trade activities.
By collaborating with the Benin Republic Customs, the Nigeria Customs Service intends to curb smuggling activities that adversely affect both economies. This joint effort will not only enhance trade facilitation but also increase revenue generation for both countries.
Adeniyi concluded by stating, "It is our hope that the program will address the issues of trade and set a roadmap for implementation of new strategies that will enhance the economy and revenue in Nigeria and Benin Republic. Thus, our organizations need to come up with ideas that will address the issues of transit and other progressive measures."
The partnership between the Nigeria Customs Service and Benin Republic Customs highlights the determination of both countries to tackle smuggling head-on and foster cross-border trade. By working together, they aim to create a conducive environment for legitimate trade and boost the economic growth of both nations.
