In a show of rectitude, Lawyers United Against Corruption (LUAC) has extended an apology to Engr. Sonny Echono, the Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), for the false corruption allegations made against him. The group's previous claims were retracted in a letter addressed to Echono.
The letter, dated July 21, 2023, titled "Letter of Apology/Declaration of Support Re: Donation of a Toyota Coasta Bus to National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) as Bribe to Cover Up Your Complicity in Alleged Massive Corruption, Contract Fraud, Procurement Racketeering Running into Billions of Naira and Flagrant Abuse of Office," expresses LUAC's recognition that the accusations were baseless.
The initial letter from LUAC, dated July 11, 2023, had accused Echono of bribery, corruption, and contract racketeering. They had demanded his resignation, alleging that his donation of a Coaster bus to NANS was an attempt to conceal his involvement in corruption. However, further investigations revealed that these claims were part of a smear campaign orchestrated by unscrupulous individuals.
Jarńes Oladunjoye, the signatory of the apology letter, addressed it to Echono with copies sent to prominent individuals such as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Oladunjoye affirmed the group's support for the "Renewed Hope Agenda" of President Tinubu and acknowledged Echono's contributions to TETFUND.
The apology letter states, "We therefore wish to sincerely apologise through this medium for any embarrassment, emotional trauma and mental stress our misguided position may have caused you." LUAC, being an umbrella body of patriotic lawyers, aims to work collaboratively with TETFUND under Echono's leadership to fulfill their mandate of rehabilitating and consolidating tertiary education in Nigeria.
LUAC's updated assessment recognizes Engr. Sonny Echono as an accomplished technocrat, commending the innovations and transformations he has brought to TETFUND within a short period. Reforms initiated and implemented under his stewardship focus on eliminating corruption, improving project delivery time, preventing cost escalation, and enhancing overall efficiency in fulfilling the organization's mandate.
It is worth noting that Echono's directive for open and competitive bidding in project procurement, announced during a public ceremony held at the National Universities Commission (NUC) on May 9, 2022, demonstrates his commitment to transparency and efficiency.
Having assessed the evidence gathered during their investigation, LUAC expresses their confidence in Echono's leadership and pledges to support him in all aspects of his patriotic service to Nigeria.
As this apology marks a turning point, LUAC intends to collaborate closely with TETFUND under Engr. Sonny Echono's guidance, striving for excellence and advancing the key objectives of the organization.
