Former Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State recently had his automobile shop raided by the Asset Recovery Committee set up by current Governor Hyacinth Alia. The raid, which took place in Makurdi, resulted in the seizure of a number of vehicles from the shop.
According to reports by Daily Trust, the committee resorted to using towing vans to pull out the vehicles after their attempts to drive them away failed. The operation has raised significant concern and controversy in the state.
Governor Alia's Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, released a statement alleging that Samuel Ortom looted around 29 government vehicles. The press secretary stated, "The case of the government house is particularly pitiable with vandalised furniture, window blinds, electronics and other household appliances. This is besides the carting away of all vehicles, including an ambulance and press crew bus attached to the office of the governor. At the last count, 29 vehicles attached to the governor's office are still nowhere to be found."
However, the Benue state Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Publicity Secretary, Bemgba Iortyom, has accused Governor Alia of witch-hunting his predecessor. In a statement, Iortyom said, "Earlier today, thugs accompanied by security agents purporting to be on an asset recovery mission, raided a private automobile workshop owned by the former governor's business concern, Oracle Nig. Ltd., carting away motor vehicles at the premises of the workshop. Staff of the workshop have confirmed that the vehicles, of a yet to be ascertained number, were those brought there for repairs by private owners and are not sourced from any public institution."
This development has caused a rift between the two political factions, with the PDP supporting Ortom's claim that the seized vehicles belong to private individuals. The PDP spokesperson also expressed concern that the raid highlights a trend of politically motivated attacks on opposition party members.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has commended former Governor Samuel Ortom for voluntarily reporting himself at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) office. Ortom visited the EFCC office in Makurdi on Tuesday, June 20.
In a separate report by Legit.ng, it was stated that workers in Benue State received a sigh of relief after receiving one month's salary from the state government, under the leadership of Governor Hyacinth Alia. Workers expressed their gratitude, mentioning that they started receiving alerts on Sunday, June 25.
