Gunmen Abduct Catholic Priest and Seminarian from St. Peter's Catholic Church in Gyedna
Gunmen suspected to be armed bandits infiltrated St. Peter's Catholic Church in Gyedna, Niger State, abducting a Catholic priest, Reverend Fr. Paul Sanogo, and a Seminarian, Mahinini Dominis, from their residence. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday night, has left the tight-knit Catholic community in shock and despair. Efforts are underway to rescue the victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.

In a shocking incident, gunmen suspected to be armed bandits stormed St. Peter's Catholic Church in Gyedna, Niger State, on Wednesday night, August 2nd, abducting Reverend Fr. Paul Sanogo and a Seminarian, Mahinini Dominis, from their residence.

The Catholic priest and the Seminarian, who were serving as pastoral workers at St. Luke's Catholic Church Gyedna, within the Minna Catholic Diocese, were taken captive by the assailants at approximately 11 pm. Despite desperate attempts to reach the victims, no contact has been established with the abductors, and no ransom demands have been made.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Wasiu A. Abiodun, revealed that the armed kidnappers infiltrated the remote St. Peter's Catholic Church, which is situated in Gyedna village, Tafa Local Government Area.

"On 2/08/2023 at about 2330 hrs, suspected armed kidnappers stormed St. Peter's Catholic Church at Gyedna village, Tafa Local Government Area and abducted one Rev. Fr. Paul Sanogo and a Seminarian, Mahinini Dominis," Abiodun stated.

He further explained the challenging circumstances surrounding the location, as the church is situated on the outskirts of the town. This area, about an hour's drive from the mountainous Sabon-Wuse, shares its boundaries with dense forests and mountains. Moreover, it is in close proximity to the Kagarko region of Kaduna state, making it a convenient target for the criminal act.

The difficult terrains and remote location of the church have made rescue operations more complicated.

As the investigation into the unfortunate incident unfolds, the remaining Seminarians in the vicinity have been advised to temporarily relocate for their safety. The Nigerian security forces are promptly working to secure the release of Rev. Fr. Paul Sanogo and Seminarian Mahinini Dominis, while efforts are underway to apprehend the abductors and bring them to justice.

This audacious abduction has sent shockwaves through the Catholic community in Gyedna and beyond. The church, a sacred place for worship, peace, and community ties, has become a target for criminals. The incident has also highlighted the high levels of insecurity in parts of Nigeria, particularly in remote areas.

It is now crucial for the relevant authorities to prioritize the safety and security of citizens, especially within vulnerable communities. The abduction of a Catholic priest and a Seminarian is a distressing occurrence that demands urgent action to ensure the safe return of the victims and to prevent such incidents from recurring.

The hearts and prayers of many go out to Rev. Fr. Paul Sanogo, who has dedicated his life to serving the church and the community, as well as to Seminarian Mahinini Dominis, a hopeful and aspirational figure on his journey towards priesthood.

As the Catholic faithful and well-wishers unite in solidarity, they remain hopeful that the victims will be rescued unharmed and that peace will be restored to Gyedna and its surrounding regions.
