The Lamido of Adamawa, Dr. Muhammadu Mustapha, has commended the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on its telecom consumer protection initiatives, including the recent Village Square Dialogue (VSD). The royal father urged the NCC to explore ways to reduce the cost of telecom services and ensure wider availability. NCC's Director of Consumer Affairs highlighted initiatives such as harmonized shortcodes and toll-free numbers to empower consumers.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has received commendation from the Lamido of Adamawa, Dr. Muhammadu Mustapha, for its dedicated efforts in protecting and educating telecom consumers in the country. The Lamido expressed his appreciation during the recent Village Square Dialogue (VSD) held in Yola, Adamawa State.

The event, themed "Know Your Rights as Telecom Consumers," provided an opportunity for individual telecom consumers and businesses to engage directly with the NCC on various telecom-related issues. Prof. Abubakar Tahir, representing the Lamido Adamawa, acknowledged the NCC's commitment to consumer education and enlightenment, emphasizing the importance of these initiatives in empowering consumers.

The Lamido also urged the NCC to explore additional ways to reduce the cost of telecom services and ensure wider availability across the country. He emphasized the need for affordable, high-quality, and easily accessible telecommunications services in all communities.

In response, Alkasim Umar, the Director of Consumer Affairs at NCC, highlighted the regulator's unwavering dedication to protecting and empowering consumers while providing an enabling environment for service providers to deliver quality services. Umar noted that the Village Square Dialogue was part of NCC's outreach events aimed at fostering face-to-face interactions among the NCC, service providers, and consumers.

Umar also highlighted some consumer-centric initiatives introduced by the NCC. These include the introduction of harmonized shortcodes, which provide uniform codes for consumers to access various services across all networks. Additionally, consumers were reminded of the NCC's Toll-Free Number, 622, for lodging complaints, the Emergency Number, 112, for urgent situations, and the Do-Not-Disturb (DND) 2442 Short Code to block unsolicited messages.

Umar emphasized that information and education play crucial roles in empowering telecom consumers and protecting their rights. By educating consumers about their privileges and expectations, the NCC aims to sensitively enhance their understanding of the industry.

It is commendable that the NCC is actively engaging and addressing consumer concerns and providing platforms for open dialogue. By ensuring transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement in the telecom sector, the NCC is contributing to the growth and development of Nigeria's digital economy.

The Lamido of Adamawa's commendation serves as a testament to the NCC's commitment to enhancing telecom consumer protection and satisfaction. The NCC will continue its efforts to educate and inform consumers, enabling them to make informed decisions and be aware of their rights.
