Kaduna Workers, Banks, Telecommunication Outlets, and Polytechnic Join NLC Warning Strike
Workers, banks, telecommunication outlets, and Kaduna Polytechnic in Kaduna have joined a two-day warning strike organized by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC). The strike has led to the closure of ministries and academic institutions, disrupting normal activities in the state. However, commercial activities continue uninterrupted, with marketers and transporters still engaged in their businesses.

Kaduna, Sept. 5, 2023 - Workers, banks, telecommunication outlets, and Kaduna Polytechnic have joined the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) two-day warning strike, causing a disruption to normal activities in the state. The strike, organized by the NLC, aims to call attention to workers' welfare and other pressing issues.

A check carried out by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent in Kaduna reveals that the Judiciary Staff Union (JUSUN) and other Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in the state have also joined the strike, resulting in the closure of various government offices.

NAN's correspondent observed a citywide shutdown as ministries remained closed, with no sign of workers reporting for duty. However, commercial activities continued uninterrupted, with marketers and transporters going about their businesses.

Academic institutions, including the prominent Kaduna Polytechnic, were also affected by the strike. The closure of the polytechnic led to students returning home in large numbers. Disappointed students expressed their frustrations, with one student, Shedrack Musa, regretting the expenditure of transportation money to school.

At the Kaduna State University (KASU), students were present within the premises, although lectures did not take place. When contacted, the institution's Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr. Adamu Bargo, stated that they were still working.

The NLC warning strike seeks to draw attention to the plight of workers in Kaduna and highlight the importance of improved working conditions, salaries, and general welfare. The NLC, in collaboration with its affiliates, aims to utilise this strike to engage the government and relevant stakeholders in constructive dialogue.

It is expected that the strike action will provide an opportunity for workers to voice their concerns and to exert pressure on the government to address their demands. Many workers have faced numerous challenges, including inadequate pay, poor working conditions, and a lack of job security.

The NLC, as the umbrella body for Nigerian workers, continues to champion the rights, interests, and welfare of workers across the country. This warning strike in Kaduna is a unified effort to demonstrate the collective strength of workers and to demand better treatment from employers and the government.

The impact of the strike is being felt across various sectors in Kaduna, but it serves as a rallying cry for workers who have long yearned for improved conditions. The closure of government offices and academic institutions sends a strong message of solidarity and determination among workers in the state.

While the strike has inconvenienced students and disrupted normal activities, it is a necessary step towards achieving better conditions for workers and ensuring their voices are heard. The hope is that the strike action will lead to meaningful negotiations and resolutions between the NLC and the government.
