Edo State NLC Seals Government Facilities
The Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has sealed government facilities in the state as part of a two-day warning strike. The strike, led by the state NLC Chairman, Odion Olaye, has seen the closure of the state secretariat complex, Central Hospital, High Court complex, and other government parastatals. Olaye emphasized that the strike is total and that the NLC has the numerical strength to make their demands known to the Federal Government.

The Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has taken a bold step in its bid to make their demands known to the Federal Government. The two-day warning strike, which commenced yesterday, has seen the sealing of government facilities across the state. This move is in line with the NLC's quest for better working conditions and improved welfare for workers.

Leading the strike action, the state NLC Chairman, Odion Olaye, spoke passionately about the importance of the strike and the need to send a strong message to the government. He stated that the strike is total and has been complied with across various sectors, including the state secretariat complex, Central Hospital, High Court complex, Coca-Cola, Guinness, 7Up, and transport sector.

When questioned about the absence of support from the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Olaye made it clear that the NLC does not require their partnership to effect change. With a membership strength of 42 unions, the NLC is confident in its ability to champion the cause on its own.

Meanwhile, the impact of the warning strike is being felt in other states across the country. In Port Harcourt, Rivers State, commercial activities were brought to a standstill as banks and other commercial institutions remained closed. The public deserted major roads like Port Harcourt/Aba expressway, Odili, Abuloma, Sani Abacha, and Ikwerre roads.

Alex Agwanwor, Chairman of the NLC in Rivers State, expressed the union's determination to take more drastic action if the Federal Government fails to address their demands after the two-week ultimatum. The NLC has given the government a timeline to meet their requirements.

The warning strike also affected Akwa Ibom State, where government activities were grounded. The Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat, which houses various government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), was locked and inaccessible to workers.

The statewide compliance with the strike directive demonstrates the solidarity and determination of workers to fight for their rights and fair treatment. The NLC and its members believe that only by taking a strong stance can they bring about much-needed change and improve the lives of workers throughout the country.

While the strike action has received support from workers and the NLC, not all voices are in agreement. The South South zonal chairman of the Civil Liberty Organisation (CLO), Karl Chinedu, expressed concern and questioned the necessity of the warning strike. Nevertheless, the NLC remains resolute in its decision.

The two-day warning strike in Edo State and other parts of the country serves as a wake-up call to the government. It is a reminder that the welfare and rights of workers cannot be neglected. As the NLC continues to advocate for better conditions, it is hoped that a resolution will be reached that benefits all parties involved.
