Abuja, Aug. 2, 2023 - Nigeria and Benin Republic have pledged to embark on a collaborative journey to explore their shared culture, history, and demography as a means to benefit their citizens. The announcement was made by President Bola Tinubu during a rare invitation as a Special Guest at the 63rd Independence anniversary of the Republic of Benin.
The close proximity of Nigeria and Benin Republic, along with their similarities in economy and development outlook, make it imperative for the two countries to collectively pursue the goal of growth and prosperity. "Nigeria and Benin Republic are conjoined twins. We are joined from one stomach. In every aspect, we are one and we share much in common," stated Tinubu during an interaction with journalists.
Highlighting the vision of political and economic stability for both nations, President Tinubu affirmed that this can only be achieved through a strong partnership. He assured that efforts to strengthen and upscale cooperation would be undertaken at various levels.
Tinubu expressed his gratitude to President Patrice Talon for the honor of the invitation and for extending it to six Nigerian governors who attended the event. The governors in attendance were Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq of Kwara State, Nasir Idris of Kebbi State, and Mohammed Bago of Niger State.
In his address, President Talon emphasized that the historic invitation bestowed upon President Tinubu was a demonstration of the high respect he commands, given his track record of providing leadership in Nigeria and the West Coast. "It is not a normal practice to invite a foreign leader for independence celebrations, but this signals the constructive and positive relationship we have enjoyed, and more benefits to come," added President Talon.
Aside from sharing a border, President Talon underscored the fact that Nigeria and Benin have functioned as a family for many years, and it is vital to encourage the nurturing of this good relationship among their citizens.
President Tinubu has returned to Nigeria following the Independence event and is scheduled to participate in the high-level meeting of the ruling All Progressives Congress, which will take place between August 2nd and August 3rd.
This collaboration between Nigeria and Benin Republic holds great promise for the future. By leveraging their shared culture, history, and demography, the two countries can foster deeper understanding, mutual respect, and increased cooperation. It is an opportunity to celebrate their similarities while embracing their distinctiveness.
