In a recent development, Imo State University in Owerri has suspended seven lecturers, including a professor, for sundry professional misconducts. These misconducts were reported to range from the imposition of textbooks, handouts, and illegal levies on students as a condition for attending lectures. Such actions are a clear violation of ethical conduct within the academic setting.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Uchefula Ogbonna Chukwumaeze, revealed these suspensions during a press briefing in his office. He emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards of professionalism and integrity among the faculty members. In his efforts to address corruption and indiscipline within the university, Professor Chukwumaeze has taken decisive actions to ensure accountability.
Among the suspended faculty members, one lecturer had been involved in physical assault against a student on frivolous grounds. The professor expressed his disappointment with such behavior and stated that while the lecturer had shown remorse and sought forgiveness from the victim and her family, it was essential to impose suitable penalties to deter similar incidents in the future.
To further enhance the academic environment, the Vice Chancellor has implemented several measures. He directed all lecturers to release students' results within four weeks after every examination, preventing any unnecessary delays. Additionally, Professor Chukwumaeze has prioritized the welfare of the university's staff, ensuring regular payment of salaries, promotions for deserving individuals, and opportunities for professional development through workshops and conferences.
In terms of infrastructure and academic offerings, the Vice Chancellor has made notable progress. The institution now boasts an Institute of Atmospheric Research, which is linked to the Nigerian Meteorological Institute. Furthermore, a new Faculty of Communication and Media Studies has been established, along with a University Press. The Medical Centre has been renovated, and the faculties of Engineering and Agriculture have received increased attention.
Professor Chukwumaeze mentioned that all courses offered by the university, except Education Mathematics, have secured accreditation from the relevant authorities. He emphasized the success and achievements of the university's graduates both within Nigeria and abroad. By fostering a spirit of transparency and openness, the Vice Chancellor has ensured accessibility for all stakeholders.
The suspension of the seven lecturers serves as a clear message that professional misconduct will not be tolerated at Imo State University. Professor Chukwumaeze's commitment to accountability, integrity, and academic excellence lays a strong foundation for the future success of the institution.
