The Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Chidinma Oreh, has assured the people of Rivers State that the state government is fully prepared to tackle any challenges that may arise from the predicted flooding. The assurance was given during a sensitisation visit to Opobo Town, headquarters of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area.

Dr. Oreh emphasized that the government has made adequate preparations in terms of logistics for vector control and addressing malaria and other health issues that may arise during emergencies. The focus is also on sanitation, as maintaining hygiene among the rural populace is crucial to prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases.

The Commissioner urged the people of the area to remain vigilant and ensure that their drains and surroundings are clean to prevent any health emergencies. By taking proactive measures to keep the environment clean, they can significantly reduce the risk of diseases associated with flooding.

The Chairman of the Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, Dr. Enyiada Cookey-Gam, commended the state government for the sensitisation efforts. He stated that the current administration is focused on the welfare of the people and their overall well-being.

Dr. Cookey-Gam revealed that the local government has established a flood management committee with the specific mandate to manage, address, and mitigate any flood challenges that may occur as predicted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) earlier this year.

The committee has already begun operations by conducting a reconnaissance of the local government area to identify flood-prone areas. This proactive approach aims to detect and address potential emergencies in a timely manner.

The preparedness of the Rivers State government and the establishment of the flood management committee reflect a commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of the people in the face of impending flooding.

As the local government and state government work hand in hand, it is hoped that the potential impact of flooding on public health can be minimized. By focusing on vector control, sanitation, and prompt addressing of health issues, the government aims to mitigate the risks associated with flooding.

It is crucial for the residents of Rivers State to heed the advice of the Commissioner and ensure that their surroundings are clean and free from stagnant water, which can serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other disease-causing organisms.

With proactive measures in place and collective efforts from the government and the people, Rivers State can effectively tackle the challenges posed by flooding and ensure the well-being of its citizens.
