Nigeria Correctional Service Focuses on Rehabilitation through Sports
The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) has shifted its focus from punishment to rehabilitation in the prison system. In collaboration with non-governmental organizations, the NCS has been promoting reformatory activities, such as sports, to aid in the mental, emotional, and psychological rehabilitation of inmates. The recent month-long sports tournament organized for inmates of the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja showcased the positive impact of sports on inmates' wellbeing. The tournament witnessed the participation of various dignitaries, including House of Representatives members. This article explores the shift towards rehabilitation and emphasizes the transformative power of sports within the correctional system.

The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) has made significant changes to its prison system, focusing on rehabilitation rather than punishment. According to the Controller of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Correctional Centre, Ibrahim Idris, since the enactment of the Correctional Services Act in 2019, the prison system has been geared towards rehabilitation, reformation, and reintegration of inmates.

The transformation also included a change in name from Prison Services to Correctional Services. This shift signifies a change in approach, emphasizing the importance of reformatory activities and addressing the mental, emotional, and psychological needs of inmates. One such initiative is the integration of sports activities within the correctional system for the benefit of the inmates.

Speaking at the end of a month-long sports tournament held at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja, Ibrahim Idris emphasized the significance of sports in the rehabilitation process. While football was the highlight of the tournament, other activities including table tennis and judo were also featured.

In addition to physical fitness, sporting events serve as a platform for inmates to develop skills, enhance their mental and emotional well-being, and prepare for a productive life after incarceration. These reformatory activities provide inmates with a sense of purpose, self-esteem, and higher aspirations, which can facilitate a positive transformative shift in their mindset.

The success of the sports tournament was made possible through the sponsorship of the Legend Golden Care Foundation (LGCF), a non-governmental organization (NGO) committed to supporting inmates' psychosocial well-being. LGCF ensures that inmates receive essential support, including programs tackling awaiting trial syndrome, recidivism, prison congestion, education, skill acquisition, medical care, and pro-bono legal services.

Mrs. Kanayo Olisa-Metuh, the Executive Director of LGCF, expressed joy over the overwhelming turnout and the unwavering support from both inmates and correctional officials during the tournament. She highlighted the profound impact that sports can have in driving transformation, breaking down barriers, and building brighter futures.

During the event, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Correctional Services, Hon. Chinedu Oga, commended LGCF for its sponsorship and assured continued support from the National Assembly for improving correctional services in the country.

Witnessed by dignitaries and officials, the sports tournament showcased the commitment of the Nigeria Correctional Service to prioritizing rehabilitation and reformation. The participation of inmates highlighted their joy and sense of inclusiveness within the system.

Efforts such as these showcase the potential for change and the remarkable ability of sports to positively impact inmates' lives. By involving inmates in reformatory activities like sports, the Nigeria Correctional Service is taking steps toward fostering rehabilitation, reformation, and reintegration for a brighter future.
