The Apapa Command of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has achieved significant milestones in revenue collection and anti-smuggling activities. From January to July, the command intercepted two pistols concealed in a groupage cargo, and a suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident. Additionally, the customs command collected N502.987 billion in revenue, making it one of the highest revenue collections in its history.
Under the leadership of Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Auwal Baba Mohammed, the Apapa Command has focused on increasing compliance among importers, exporters, and their agents. This has been achieved through system profiling and manifest tracking that gauges the integrity levels of traders based on their previous transaction records. The command's efforts in treating compliant traders with efficiency and cost-effectiveness have been rewarded with improved revenue collection.
Comptroller Mohammed urged all port users to be compliant and avoid the risk of having their consignments seized. Non-compliant traders not only face the possibility of penalties and prosecution but also waste time and money on terminal space due to demurrage and other costs.
The seizures made by the Apapa Command include prohibited drugs, used tires, rice, vegetable oil, and various other goods. These rigorous anti-smuggling activities contribute to the command's commitment to maintaining law and order within the port.
With the aid of available technology, such as electronic manifest tracking, the Apapa Command is accelerating trade facilitation. Comptroller Mohammed highlighted this as a crucial step towards enhancing ease of doing business and promoting a favorable trading environment.
At a recent monthly meeting of Terminal/Unit Heads, Comptroller Mohammed emphasized the importance of discipline among the command's officers. He stressed that discipline is the foundation of good work etiquette, citing punctuality, the diligent application of the Nigeria Customs Service Act, and adherence to the law as examples.
Nigeria has high expectations for the NCS, and the service looks to the Apapa Command to achieve its highest revenue collection. Comptroller Mohammed called on all officers to use their knowledge and adherence to the rules to facilitate legitimate trade and prevent the inadvertent release of uncustomed goods. The successes recorded in the first half of 2023 belong to the entire command, and the CAC challenged his team to strive for even greater achievements in the second half.
