LAGOS - LAWMA Academy, the educational arm of Lagos Waste Management Authority, has organized a four-week summer school, targeted at children aged 8 to 12, to teach them the importance of effective waste management. The program commenced on July 31, 2023, at LAWMA's headquarters in Ijora-Olopa.

Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, expressed his thoughts on the summer school and highlighted its purpose. He emphasized the need to instill proper waste management practices and educate the younger generation on environmental sanitation through arts and crafts, upcycling, as well as indoor and outdoor sports activities. The inclusion of field trips and other engaging experiences in the curriculum aims to make learning enjoyable and comprehensive.

"The Summer School program is designed to educate children from a tender age about waste management and environmental sanitation. By doing so, we aim to raise ambassadors for a cleaner and healthier environment. Our seasoned facilitators provide guidance and knowledge in a conducive learning environment, shaping the youngsters into conscientious environmental activists," said Dr. Gbadegesin.

Parents and guardians were encouraged to enroll their children in the summer school, taking advantage of the extended school holiday. For those unable to attend physically, an online option was made available to ensure inclusivity.

Mrs. Elizabeth Ademola, the team lead at LAWMA Academy, highlighted the program's significance and its emphasis on simplifying waste and environmental management concepts for children. The objective is to equip each participant with holistic knowledge of environmental sustainability practices.

Since its inception, LAWMA Academy's summer school has benefited hundreds of pupils in Lagos State, providing them with essential waste management and environmental knowledge.

By organizing this summer school, LAWMA Academy is actively shaping the next generation of environmental stewards. The program's approach of combining education, hands-on activities, and field trips ensures that the students gain practical understanding and develop their passion for sustainable waste management. The impact of this initiative extends beyond the summer months, creating a long-lasting effect on the participating children and the broader community.
