The flight from the country arrived close to midnight, and as I made my way home through the bustling streets of Lagos, I couldn't help but marvel at the magnificence of the city. The lights, the buildings, and the vibrant atmosphere were awe-inspiring, even in the late hours of the night. It was a striking contrast to the city I had been in, which was often referred to as the "Paris of West Africa."
As I marveled at Lagos, I couldn't help but ponder on the question: Do Nigerians truly appreciate the character, substance, and strength we possess as a nation? The answer, I believe, is a resounding yes. However, we must question what we are doing to consistently showcase these qualities to the world.
Take, for instance, the attire worn in business settings. In the "Paris of Africa," I noticed a sense of pride in wearing African prints as business attire. Many individuals confidently displayed their heritage and culture through their clothing. On the other hand, in Nigeria, we often relegate our cultural attire to casual Fridays, favoring imported Western garments for the rest of the week. Why can't we embrace our cultural attire every day in the workplace?
This brings me to the topic of "Made in Nigeria." Former Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, launched a contest aimed at promoting Nigerian-made products. The objective was to highlight how products made with locally sourced raw materials can compete favorably with imported goods. The contest was scheduled to culminate with a Made in Nigeria Roundtable, where stakeholders and consumers could discuss ways to further support homegrown industries.
However, it is unclear whether the promised initiatives were fully realized or effectively communicated to the public. This raises the question: Are we merely paying lip service to the idea of "Made in Nigeria," or are concrete steps being taken to actualize this vision?
There is an undeniable sense of national pride that accompanies the sight of products proudly labeled "Made in Nigeria." Personally, I own a computer bag and handbag designed by a Nigerian brand, "Femi Handbags." These products have accompanied me on my global travels, attracting attention and praise for their quality and aesthetic appeal. Whenever asked about their origin, it fills me with pride to say that they are made in Nigeria by a talented Nigerian designer.
Imagine that same sense of pride extending beyond personal possessions. Picture Nigeria becoming a renowned exporter of goods, with products bearing the "Made in Nigeria" stamp making their way to international markets. Such a feat would not only stimulate our economy but also inspire confidence and fuel innovation.
Empowering local industries and embracing "Made in Nigeria" has numerous benefits. It creates employment opportunities, especially within small and medium enterprises, which form the backbone of our economy. Additionally, it conserves foreign exchange and strengthens our national currency, contributing to overall economic stability. When we prioritize our local industries, we foster technological advancements, encourage innovation, and facilitate knowledge transfer.
It is of utmost importance that we nurture the concept of "Made in Nigeria" and actively support it. This is not a fleeting trend; it is a movement that has the potential to transform our nation. We must all become ambassadors for Nigerian-made products, recognizing their value, promoting their excellence, and ensuring their success in local and international markets.
Nigeria possesses incredible character, substance, and strength. It is time for us to harness these qualities and showcase them through our actions, our choices, and our commitment to "Made in Nigeria."
