In a press conference held yesterday in Abuja, the Nigeria International Non-Governmental Organisations Forum (NIF) announced that International Non-Governmental Organisations (INGOs) provided life-saving assistance to over 40 million vulnerable citizens across 23 states in Nigeria last year. The non-profit organizations executed 267 projects, including humanitarian, peace-building, and development initiatives, impacting the lives of millions.
Camillia Camadin, the Director of the Nigeria INGO Forum, highlighted the efforts made by the INGOs in the Northeast region to improve the healthcare system, service delivery, education, and skills development. Their work focuses on developing sustainable solutions for vulnerable people and communities, aligning their interventions with government structures to promote lasting peace in conflict-affected areas.
The INGOs have also recognized the importance of localization and empowering local leaders to engage in policy dialogue. Through capacity-building initiatives, community leaders are trained on how to effectively communicate their needs to council chairmen and councillors, ensuring that the voices of the communities are heard and acted upon.
Charles Usie, the Country Director of Plan International, debunked claims that a significant portion of their funds go into logistics. He emphasized that the INGOs adhere to global practices and ensure efficient use of resources. It is unacceptable for any INGO to allocate 50% of its budget to overhead costs, as this could result in blacklisting from donor organizations.
The NIF also mentioned that international bodies are gradually moving towards the Northwest region to assess the needs of the states and provide aid to the victims. This expansion of assistance across different regions demonstrates the commitment of INGOs to reaching vulnerable populations in various parts of the country.
The challenges faced by Nigeria, including insecurity and other socio-economic issues, continue to impact the lives of millions. The provision of life-saving assistance by INGOs plays a vital role in alleviating the suffering of vulnerable citizens and supporting communities in need. The collaborative efforts between the government, local leaders, and INGOs are essential in addressing these challenges and fostering sustainable development.
As the Director of the Nigeria INGO Forum concluded the press conference, she reemphasized the commitment of INGOs to the well-being of Nigeria's vulnerable people and communities. The focus on localization, capacity-building, and sustainable solutions will further strengthen the impact of INGOs and contribute to the overall development and peacebuilding efforts in the nation.
