The Lagos State House of Assembly is standing firm against threats and attacks following its rejection of certain commissioner-nominees suggested by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, in a statement released by his Media Assistant, Eromosele Ebhomele, on Monday, August 28, emphasized that the House will not be intimated or swayed by such actions.
In recent days, Obasa has received reliable information about impending attacks on himself and other lawmakers due to the Lagos assembly's decision to reject certain commissioner-nominees. However, the Speaker clarified that there is no ongoing conflict between the House and the executive arm, including Governor Sanwo-Olu.
"There is this erroneous belief that we are waging war against the Governor. There is no basis for me and the House to fight the Governor. I will continue to say that the Governor is a brother and colleague in the Lagos project and service to the people of our State. The Governor and I have been around in the system for a long," Obasa stated.
The Speaker expressed his surprise at the assumption that any disagreement between the House and the Governor equates to a fight. He acknowledged that the House has passed numerous resolutions that the executive arm has failed to implement, yet no concerns were raised.
Obasa firmly established that the House has the legitimate right to approve or reject any nominee, and the decision to reject certain individuals was made after careful consideration. However, he refrained from divulging specific details or exposing discoveries made during the screening exercise.
"...the House has the responsibility to say 'yes' or 'no,' which we have exercised by confirming some and denying some, and we have our reasons for saying 'no' to some of the nominees," Obasa stated.
The Lagos State Assembly shook the political landscape on Wednesday, August 23, when it declined to clear 17 out of the 39 commissioner nominees presented by Governor Sanwo-Olu for his second term in office. Among the 17 were six individuals who had served in Sanwo-Olu's first term.
While criticism has emerged about the composition of Sanwo-Olu's nominees, particularly from some Muslim groups citing perceived bias, one-time governorship candidate and practicing Muslim, Tope Abdurrazaq Balogun, came to the defense of the governor's cabinet.
The Lagos State House of Assembly reaffirms its commitment to its constitutional obligations and will not succumb to intimidation. The rejection of nominee
