Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy Under Fire for Allegedly Abusing Naira Notes

ABUJA - Hannatu Musa Musawa, the newly appointed Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy in Nigeria, has found herself in hot water due to allegations of abusing the country's legal tender, the Naira notes. This incident has ignited a debate among citizens and authorities regarding the seriousness of the offense and the actions that should be taken.

The CBN Act explicitly states that tampering with the Naira is considered a criminal offense and is punishable by law. According to the Act, individuals found guilty of this offense can face imprisonment for up to six months, a fine of N50,000, or both.

The Act specifically mentions that activities such as spraying, dancing, or marching on the Naira are forms of abuse or tampering with Nigeria's currency. These actions are seen as disrespectful and can damage the physical integrity of the notes, leading to their devaluation.

The big question now is whether the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will act against Musawa and enforce the provisions laid out in the CBN Act. Isa Abdulmumin, the director of the corporate communications department of the apex bank, confirmed that the Naira abuse policy is still active and anyone found guilty of such actions will face punishment.

In an interview with the BBC, Abdulmumin stated, "The law is still active, and if anything, stringent measures are in place to curtail such anti-social behavior." This statement implies that the CBN is determined to crack down on any form of abuse of the Naira.

It is worth noting that this isn't the first time Hannatu Musa Musawa has been involved in controversy. In 2020, she faced rejection for her ministerial post due to her failure to provide evidence of participating in the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme. However, President Tinubu ultimately nominated her as a minister.

The news of Musawa allegedly abusing Naira notes has become a topic of heated discussion in Nigeria, with citizens expressing their opinions on social media platforms.
